View Full Version : 9mm Snubbie ammo question
I just acquired a Taurus 905 and am curious as to what is a good SD ammo choice. I am wondering about what advice people who have had the 905 or the Smith 940 have towards ammo choice, especially in regards to penetration and expansion. I am not particularly recoil sensitive, but would like something that allows for a timely follow-up shot.
Posted this in snubbie forum as well.

I wet pack tested various 147 grain 9mm: HST, Ranger, and WWB Personal Protection and found that the HST expanded beautifully, so did the Ranger, but both had too shallow penetration. I chose to carry the WWB Personal Protection because it had better penetration and still expanded (seem to expand later which allowed more penetration). I posted my results long back but the post has since been lost in the many server crashes, reloads, etc.

I found a picture.
Recovered: Center Blazer 12", upper left WWB 8 3/4", upper right Ranger 5 3/4", lower left Gold Dot 6 1/2", lower right HST 5 1/4"

For wet pack, divide by 2/3 to get penetration comparable to gel.

Blazer 12" wet == 18" gel
WWB 8 3/4"wet == 13.125" gel
Ranger 5 3/4" wet == 8.625" gel
Gold Dot 6 1/2" wet == 9.75" gel
HST 5 1/4" wet == 7.875" gel
Thanks Dandapani. Glad to know what might be the best choice is comparitavely less expensive. Am I correct in assuming that there is no need to use denim when wet pack testing since the material you are shooting into is just as likely to clog a hollow point as clothing?

I live in FL. Not much denim wearing. The newer rounds GD, HST, Ranger all do well through denim in other testing. I'm not sure about the WWB Personal Protection. It is "older" technology compared to the others. I carry HST in my P239 9mm... :cool:

I'm curious to see what velocities you see with a 9MM snub? I would think they are close to 38 Sp loads! I would also think a 124 gr bullet would be best to get the most velocity to bullet wt.
