Just bought Moss 500 Tactical

Just bought my first shotgun, a Mossberg 500 Tactical. Anything I should know about this before I start blasting away? Any good recommendations for HD ammo?

Planning on putting a flashlight on it, any way in particular work for you guys? The Surefire forend is on the expensive side for me, but I am looking into it. Any other options? Thanks

There are other options, if you can at all afford it Surefire is the best.

HD ammo: Look into Hornady TAP, Federal Tactical and Remington TAC8, though any 12ga buckshot will do in a pinch, most common being 00 Buck.

Go burn through about 2-3 boxes of birdshot (any kind, typical dove or quail load, etc) it's inexpensive, will break the gun in and get you used to loading and firing.

Pattern the buckshot yourself. Every shotgun is different even with the same brand and ammo. Put up a couple silhouettes (on a private range, preferably) and fire several rounds, same aim point at 5 yards, then 10, 15, 20 etc (as far as you want to go out, 20 being about the max for most people). Then you know where the rounds pattern in comparison to the sights.

Stick with standard 2 3/4" ammo. Magnum rounds are fine for geese and shooting through terrorist cars or something, but for home defense they are not needed and in fact can slow you down (more recoil, more flash and blast) without adding too much.

Buck isn't cheap, but stock up 40-50 rounds. If you feel like it add 20-30 slugs and shoot a few so you know where they go too.

When i still had a shotgun I had 100+ Hornady TAP, 2 boxes of birdshot and 50 slugs.
