I first read about these in POINT OF IMPACT. I know that they are, basically, pistol catridges designed to fire No. 12 birdshot and thats about it. Does anyone have an personal experience with these rounds or any knowledge of their potential as a self-defense round against unprotected targets? This is all part of research for my novel.

They make a large surface wound and limited penatration. Most people say no as a self defence round. I tried the 45 acp one time very inaccurate at 10yds and didn't want to feed in my Colt. Find a different round. maybe the Corbon DPX (all copper bullet) their accurate and have the penatration.
The Glaser and Magsafe bullets are a copper jacket filled with birdshot that breaks up when it hits a target, if that target is a human then they cause a very nasty, very shallow wound. they are also very light for caliber and high velocity for caliber. They do not penetrate deep enough to be taken seriously as a defenseor duty round. Probably would be excellent for stray cats and dogs though. Also they are incredibly expensive, too expensive, when all the great duty rounds are available for a fraction of the cost.

Alright. Thanks for the info. I'm trying to remain as accurate as I can, so I wanted to investigate the actual effectiveness of the rounds.

I wouldn't say they don't penitrate deep enough to be taken seriously. Anyone who takes one to the chest, its more than likely a very dead individual.
However, there are much better choices. For defensive rounds.
I carry them as rounds 1 and 2, but only because I have a trouble pitbull, and I'm much more likely to have to drop the hammer on it, than people. The Glasers are backed up by good 165 grain JHP's just in case.

I did get a little carried away, I know they cause a great deal of damage to whatever living tissue they hit, but a setup like yours with the first round or two of glaser and the rest standard JHP seems like a much better setup than all glaser. I would just be worried that if I ever needed to use them on a person that the person would be really fat or wearing clothing thicker than a T-shirt, or maybe clothes with lots of metal things stuck everywhere.
