View Full Version : Federal 158 LSWCHP +P?
My box of this is getting low. I searched for some online and couldn't find any. Ammoman has been perpetually out of stock. So I went to the Federal website and don't see it. Have they dropped it? It's getting very hard to try to carry a factory round if they are going to stop making what may be the single most effective round for that caliber. That leaves the Winchester, which supposedly doesn't expand as well, and the Remington.
So let's say I get a couple boxes of Remington, at $35.00 a box, check it for accuracy in 2 different guns, check for velocity, check for function, and have a box left to load up with. Are they going to stop making theirs too?
I could go over to the 135GD but I'd have to get another mold and work up load data for a training round. Not a big deal, but alot more trouble than just getting another box of the Federal 158LSWCHP.
Would be kinda nice if they'd take their American Eagle and UMC 158 lead loads, add a pinch more powder and put a hole in the bullet.

I do not think that Federal makes that load anymore.I use the Remington load.I have shot this load from Winchester,Federal and Remington. They all shot and felt the same to me.These loads are getting harder to find and more expensive.I buy some every time I find them locally.
Have you checked out any of the smaller ammo manufacturers like Georgia Arms? I know I like their .40 and 9mm that I have used, and I plan on getting some .357 Mag and some .45 from them soon to pay them back for an excellent customer service encounter I had with them not too long ago (they accidentally double charged me for an order and corrected it within the same day, before I even found out about it). I am pretty sure they also make a 158 LSWCHP +P, I don't know what bullet composition they use but I am sure you could find out quickly and easily by calling them.
I never find them locally. All anyone sells anymore is 20 round boxes of jhp's for $30.00 or foreign made ball ammo for training. After looking at the FBI data I've got half a mind to get some boxes of USA 125jhp. They are cheap enough I could buy a few hundred at walmart and be done with it. I don't think the minor differences are gonna matter if I ever need it and I can get a Lee mold for 120's for about $20.00. They run about 900fps out of one of my guns but I think they were a little flashy. I have to look it up. It just bugs me that what is probably the best load, which should be the cheapest to make, is disappearing.
Good point NG VI. I'll look into them. I'm kinda big on the factory ammo thing. GA is kind of grey there I think. They aren't made in someone's basement, but they aren't made in ATK facotry either. If they have the LSWCHP in a "new" loading and the bullet is nice and soft with a big HP, and they don't cost almost a buck each, I'll get some.
Of course I could load about 500 of my own with Speer's LSWCHP bullet at an easy 900fps for less than the price of 2 boxes of the Remington.

Federal used to show it on their LE site and not their commercial site

60c apiece is a helluva lot for a round that's no better than a 158 JHP @ 900+.. which you can reload for what, 15c? 18c? not much..
but it's a fine round if you want factory ammo.
my best advice is buy 500 and stick in the closet, then get what you need for the next 3 months.. and in a month do it again.. rinse, repeat..
cheaper than dirt has the remington and federal both.. in that load. 50 round boxes, about 30$ per 50..
Yeah I don't believe I have ever seen that load in a shop before, I am a young guy but it is prolly the most sought-after round out there, and shouldn't cost more than Gold Dot short barrel to make.

The RP & WW loads are just as good. I keep mine for serious use & practice w/ ewuiv. lead handloads. If you find some Federal, please let us know.:wow:
Out of a Snub, the Remington version is the best of the ones still being produced due to the softer lead. In a 4" barrel, the Winchester is just as good. GA Arms is a great deal, it duplicates the others in velocity and recoil, and it also isn't bad if used out of a 4" barrel. Won't expand in a snub due to the harder lead used, but still would be a good practice load to duplicate the expensive stuff you'd carry.
The Academy here has a similar load in Winchester for $15/50

any of you ever tried the buffalo bore LSWCHP?
I looked again at the ATK LE sight and found Federal Classic 125 and 158 JHP, but no LSWCHP listed.
I looked at GA and only saw the LSWCHP as a reload. Good price and I'm sure it's good stuff, but if I'm going to carry a reload, I might as well carry my own.
Buffalo Bore are over a buck each? I'll just order the Remington's at that price. I'm already whining ammo that costs half that much. The 135 GD cost that much from Speer too, of course the (Speer)125GD are much less
Been over this many times...
ALL them have worked...
However, the Remington 158gr. LHP, had, the softest lead, and the most agressive hollow-point. Best for a snub---easily!
