View Full Version : Front sight/Loc-Tite woes

I put 500 rounds of ammo through my G26 over a three-day period. My Hi-Viz front sight, secured with RED Loc-Tite, was found to be loose during cleaning. By contrast, my G17 survived Glock's 3-day Instructor Workshop with no sight problems. Has anyone else had this happen? I stripped the slide, cleaned everything with Shooter's Choice polymer-safe degreaser, and re-applied the Loc-Tite. It will be interesting to see if the sight stays tight. 23 hours to go.........

Do you also put some red loctite on the bottom of the sight where it sits on the slide? Did you make sure the sight was fully seated and screwed in all the way?

It was seated, there was no movement, and I let it "set" for 24 hours prior to use. I used Glock's torque-limiting hex tool to assemble the screw into the sight base. The sight has been on the gun for @8 months. During cleaning yesterday, the sight moved slightly. It took almost no effort to remove the screw. I know that Red Loc-tite usually requires an act of Congress to loosen. I'm curious if gun cleaning chemicals or gun oil can erode threadlocker........

I have had good luck with red loctite. I clean prior to loctite application with non chlorinated brake cleaner. Not only slide and screw, but also threads in front sight itself. Put some brake cleaner on pipe cleaner to get into threads on the front sight. And I make sure no pipe cleaner material remains in threads. Front sight screw I put in bottle cap and soak in cleaner and put clean patch in threads by pushing patch with finger nail and turn screw with tool. Then give screw one last blast of brake cleaner while holding in tool to prevent grease from fingers getting on the threads. Let brake cleaner dry and apply loctite.
I think you may have had grease somewhere that prevented loctite from holding.
Gun Oil will loosen up the locktite. Just be carful and oil according to factory instructions.

The MPro 7 CLP I use may be the culprit, then. When I first put the sight on, I degreased everything and wore vinyl gloves. I did the same this time. I'll take it to the range later this week.

... Don't know about "RED" but I know that clear works great, and has alot less cure time than loctite...

270 Rounds fired thus far and no loosening of the sight. I wound up completely detail-stripping and cleaning the G26. This included a dab of Loc-tite's anti-seize paste on the connector. The trigger pull was phenomenal despite the presence of a NY-1 trigger spring. I forgot that I installed one of the old-style "black" springs (a leaf rather than a coil). In any event, I'm keeping this gun exactly as-is. I guess I'll buy a new Hi-Viz and start from scratch if the existing front comes loose again. Thanks for the responses!
