Anyone have suggestions on ammo for law enforcement carrying off-duty? Training/Practicing as well?

If you carry a .40 on duty, use the same ammo off duty.
If you don't carry a .40 on duty, Speer Gold Dots, Federal HSTs, and Winchester Rangers are usually in the top of the heap.
Doubletapammo.com makes some fine choices that run pretty hot out of a 23, he loads them with Speer Gold dots mostly.
Winchester 180grn SXTs,That's what I carry in all my .40s.My EDC G23 or my CCW G27.'08.

There's only one logical choice.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. :tongueout:
Seriously, I've become a fan of Federal HST.
Streichers has reasonable prices on several quality handgun cartridges.
Link to Streicher's Federal HST .40 S&W (http://www.streichers.com/ProductDetail.aspx?Catalog=Guns%20and%20Ammo&Category=AMMO_DHAND&Prod=FC-40HST).

Yep!
For Duty Use - Winchester Ranger Talon 165 gr - RA40TA
Same for practice unless you're on the cheap - In that case - Winchester Ranger 155 gr JHP - RA40155HP

Our department issues .40 S&W caliber Speer Gold Dot 180 grain jacketed hollowpoints for all officers (uniformed personnel carry the G22; detectives, parole/probation officers and command-level personnel carry the G23. Off-duty and backup G27 "mini-Glocks" are loaded with te same ammunition). Our qualification ammunition is the lead-free frangible rounds from Federal or Winchester. I personally prefer the lighter-weight Winchester Ranger, Remington Golden Saber, CorBon DPX or Federal HydraShok .40 S&W jacketed hollowpoints, but nobody asked me. Whatever your department issues for duty carry, that ammunition is what you also carry off-duty, even if you prefer other rounds, even if you have to buy the equivalent duty ammunition yourself, out of your own pocket. Carry what you are issued. Period. This is no great sacrifice with the Glock 23, because all of the commonly-issued law enforcement jacketed hollowpoint rounds have very-good-to-excellent stopping power records. And you have 14 rounds available without reloading... just in case.
