Good price? decent bike? I'm looking for a starter bike for my kid. He's 18, 5'10", 135 #'s. He's ridden scooters forever, but nothing with a shifter.

What other bikes would you recommend?

Depends on the condition of the bike. Was it well maintained and never dropped/crashed?

The 250 Ninja is a good beginner bike. I enjoyed mine for a year.

Thats a great little bike
Good for a novice as well as someone with a little experience
top speed is right at 100mph gets 70 miles to the gallon (real)
only downside is motor gets about 30,00 miles and then you replace it or buy another. got to keep the valves adjusted every 6 to 9,000 miles
kept one around for trips to the beach and such.
Price seems reasonable/ check the mileage and maintenance records.

Here's the ad:

This is a great bike to learn on, and gets 55-60 mpg. It has a Muzzy 4-into-1 exhaust system that sounds really nice. This bike runs great, but has been down with slight cosmetic damage. All parts have been replaced, except the lower fairing. The title is clear, and in hand, and the bike has only 5,750 miles. I'm asking $1,800, but am open to offers or possible trades (dirt bikes or ATVs).

That sounds like a reasonable deal. I'd likely go for it, if I was in the market for something like that.

I went and looked at it tonight. "slight cosmetic damage" included the gas tank under the fairing that had been bondo'd to the point there was no attaching nut for the fairing bolt. The rear tire was bald, the front tire was weather cracked, and a lot of rust starting around bolts & such, like it had been stored outside over the past couple of years.

I guess I'll keep looking.

Ugh, the oldest trick in the book. When people say, "Light fairing damage"... "Laid down gently at 5mph"... they are all full of crap. Any of those phrases means they wrecked or dropped it at a decent speed. When the bike tips, there are many parts that hit the ground. Way too many parts. How long was the motor running while the bike was on it's side, while the oil may or may not have been reaching all the necessary parts?

But unfortunately, laying down bikes gently seems to occur way too often these days. The ultimate scavenger hunt would be to find a 600cc or higher sportbike on CraigsList that HASN'T been dropped. Seems like searching for a 4-leaf clover (ok, slight exaggeration). It's amazing how none of them have been wrecked at 5+mph.

I'd say that price for that year/mileage would be ok if it hadn't ever been dropped. Keep looking, Ninja 250's always seem to be for sale at low prices.
