I just got home from purchasing a few boxes of WWB .45 ammo from Wally-World. I frequent there so much that all of the sporting goods department employees know me by name. Well as usual I was talking with the sporting goods manager and he told me that Wal-Mart corporate office gave him word that ammo prices will increase by ,possibly as much as, 40% by the end of July.
I normally wouldn't head the warning of a Wal-Mart employee, but he was absolutely correct about the rise in prices a few months ago. I honestly thought he might have been exagerating, but unfortunately he was right on the money.
Have any of you heard this as well??? You might oughta ask. I think I might sell a gun or two and use that money to stock up on ammo.

Sad as it seems, I'm inclined to believe it. Everything else is getting expensive- why not ammo?

Every time I see another thread about ammo prices going up, I start thinking more and more seriously about reloading.
I live in an apartment setting so I never seriously considered it; I don't have room in my kitchen to leave out my coffee maker and toaster at the same time, so setting up a work bench would simply take up way too much precious room someplace where I really need it. That, and until recently, I really didn't have the $250-plus in one pocket to invest in equipment and supplies.
I went to the Reloading Forum here on GT, and got lost lurking in the newbie stickie (http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=491879) for a good long time, when I realized the Lee Classic Loader Kit (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=search_redir&id=0003091210526a&navCount=2&podId=0003091&parentId=cat20847&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IJ&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20847&hasJS=true) could be had for as little as $18.99, and the Lee Hand Press Reloader Kit (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=search_redir&id=0032406215925a&navCount=4&podId=0032406&parentId=cat20847&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=2UG&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20847&hasJS=true) is a steal at $29.99. Reading the reviews of users, there are apparently a lot of people in the same boat as me: small homes and/or on the road for a stretch here and there, but still able to handload.
This might be the time to start investing in reloading tools, or else this time next year, we'll be talking about how that $750 reloader was only $250 in the summer of '08. And buying ammo will be like buying gas itself.

You got it. Seems that no matter how expensive ammo gets there are always deals to be found if you look for them. Just this past week, between an estate sale and someone leaving the country for an extended period, I purchased 3800 rds of ammo at prices well below the current market.

Not only the fuel.
The raw materials needed to produce ammunition is becoming more expensive now.

Yeah and the dollar is suffering from inflation and a sluggish economy so demand for it is continuously in a downward spiral. Anything that is bought globally will go up in cost as the dollar goes down in value.
It is really unfortunate and maybe things will stabilize or even reverse but at the moment it is not looking so good. :dunno:

I've seen several posts lately where people are talking about getting into reloading as a result of ammo prices rising.
I just want to say that reloading still just saves about the same percentage over factory ammo that it always has; components have skyrocketed! I've handloaded since 1973, and shooting has gotten very expensive. Handloading helps, but it's rather like buying regular gas instead of premium; it doesn't cut the cost in half or anything. I think some might view reloading as a way to shoot for almost free. It ain't so at all, so make sure you're really interested in setting up to reload because it's not much fun if you do it on the cheap. Personally, I would not enjoy it if I had to give up my two big Dillon presses, but I'm admittedly spoiled.
Probably the biggest advantage is that you can load and shoot cast bullets in the larger calibers, as I have for 35 years; however, there's some serious sticker shock waiting for you when you go to buy a box of 500 .44's or .45's.
Just my .02 worth.

Wow. Range ammo for my .357 Sig is $22, cheapest. I can load for $4.50, purchasing lead, or $1.50 casting and loading. I don't know of anybody who sells any kind of ammo for less than $4 a box.
Wow, I just started buying from Wal Mart and love how cheap the WWB is comparatively. I guess it's time to stock up. I was planning to already but I guess some urgency is in the picture.
Wal-Mart is price fixed for the whole calander year, so their prices shouldnt go up at all...their cost doesnt.
Also, none of my distributors have said anything about a major price increase...and normally we get a 60-90 day notice. I think you got minimum waged on this info...

Ammo already went up once at walmart this year! I heard when it went up then that it wouldn't be the only increase this year.

It may be a regional thing, not district nor national.
Does anyone's Wal-mart sell .357sig in 100 round WWB??
It is right under $23 for a box of 50 here.

I know there was a press release in the industry about a 10% increase from Winchester and Remington; I suspect bad info on a 40% increase. If they go up that much they will have gone from the cheapest place to buy ammo to one of the highest.

Only time will tell. Let's just keep our fingers crossed that the info I recieved is incorrect. Although...I'm still gonna stock up. It never hurts to have a little extra ammo lying around. And let's just face it, the price for everything is going up; so it's only a matter of time.
Wal Mart runs behind on their ammo price increases. This may be the January 4th and June 1st increase combined finally making it to the shelf price.

I save at least 40% by reloading. One really won't save if they go out and buy reloadin' stuff for every single caliber they shoot....at least not initially. If you shoot mostly one or two cals., like .357 Mag/38 Spec and 9mm, you'll definately save. Especially if you buy now and ammo continues to increase. I had a very megar set up for like 9 years while living in college apartments and even while married and our own hut: A simple RCBS single stage press, tumbler, powder thrower and digital scale(after a few years). It be all relative to what you want. If you to be a cheap bastard like me......then shop cheap bastard like. Lately, castin' me own boolits is where the savings is really at and don't take up too much room. Some of the Old School GTR guys even gave me, for free, some lead/tin ingots to get started. Some of them guys will hook ya' up for sure. If ya can't cast in bulk, they hook you up to cast what you need for next to nothing. I been shooting a crap load of 9mm, at least a couple of k's in the last couple of months in my G-35 witha' LWD 9mm barrel in it for like 3-4 cents a round. Sure, casting and reloading can take some time, but I really enjoy the process as much as shooting. Especially them cold winters when I don't get out shooting much. Okay, just my 2 cents.

In fact, some one even posted that some of the more rural Wall-um' Worlds sell Reloading supplies like the one in Silver City, NM.
