View Full Version : Sig Mosquito or Walther P22
I am wanting to add a new 22lr auto to my collection and am considering these two pistols. My cousin has the Sig, and likes it, but it will only fire CCI Stingers. I would like a few more ammo choices than that. Does anybody have any experience with either of these pistols.
I'd go with a Ruger Mark III over either of those.
I already have a Ruger Mark II, I want a smaller auto of the type like I carry, a DA/SA or DAO. The Ruger's are a little heavy for my kids to use too.
Shot both.......bought my 7 yr old the Walther P22.

The P22 is a FUN little gun!
Mine only begins to choke on non-jacketed bullets. Runs like a champ, otherwise.
Plus, it'll give you an excuse to buy a P99.

I would suggest the P-22. That design has been around longer than the SIG offering, and they have had more time to work the bugs out. The one I have has nearly 10,000 rounds through it, and it has worked well.

I bought the P22 so I could teach the girlfriend how to shoot, my g19 "has to much kick!" she shot one shot out of the g19 and put it on the bench and walked away. have not made it to the range with her again to have her shoot it, but when i tested it it fired everything no problem.
I'd suggest either a Browning Buckmark or a Ruger Mark II/III. But between those two, I've only had personal experience with the Walther P22. It was a fun little gun, but not nearly as accurate as the Browning or Ruger.

Between the 2, I'd rather look at the Buckmark since you have the Ruger already.
If the Buckmark isn't an option, I'd take the Walther a million times over. I had a Mosquito and it was the biggest POS I've ever owned. My Phoenix Arms HP22 was more reliable AND more accurate...and cost about $250 less. Really a shame, the Sig fit perfectly.
I have both a black and a grey P22. The grey one came with 2 barrels and I added the Walther laser too. They both were fussy with Federal ammo but work fine with CCI Stingers and MiniMags.
I owned both......Sig Mosquito shot like crap......I was very disappointed in Sig for producing such junk.....Walther had a few james the first 200 rounds or so....functions perfect now.....just does not like Winchester rounds...shoots Remmingtons better.
I say go get the P22.

I'd be inclined to choose between an MKIII or a Browning.

First one I have heard to really not like the Sig Mosquito. I will be buying one in the next few months as well. I am still in the air. The P22 just does not feel like much of a pistol in the hand. I need to just buy one and say .. oh it sucks and drive on.
I realize the Ruger Mark II/III and the Browning Buckmark are much more accurate, but they are too big and too heavy for my 10 year old daughter. She is shooting "her" cowgirl gun (a Ruger Single Six 32 H&R mag ) now, but I am having trouble keeping up with ammo supplies for it. I wanted a small auto for her to learn with. I will look some more at the P22, but maybe I will just get another Single Six in 22lr. Thanks again.

The P-22 is what my daughter learned to shoot with.

I own a Mosquito and shot a P22 a couple of times. The Mosquito is closer to a full sized pistol but is picky about ammo. When I shoot CCI Minimags the Mosquito works great, Federal and Remington won't cycle and have many problems. Sig service was great when the safety levers blew out the sides of the slide (using cheap Federal ammo), they fixed it and sent it back quick. It says it has a one year warrenty but I was well passed that date when "it" happened.
The P22 used a variety of ammo without a problem but the grip is on the small side. If this is for someone with small hands the grip size of the P22 would probably fit good.
If I was to buy again I'd go for the P22 (even with smallish grips) but I still use my Mosquito to compete with in 22 pistol matches (action shooting not bullseye). Again I have almost no problems with the Mosquito when shooting CCI minimags.

My first (and hopefully last) extensive experience of 10 rounds total through Mosquito took place last night. The owner offered few more mags to shoot, I declined. Didn't know triggers that crappy can exist. Made the double action of my early USP seem like it's gliding on air. As a side note there also was something unhealthy about the overpopulation of levers.

I have a mosquito, and it runs fine with CCI mini-mags. Its already been mentioned that they are fussy with ammo, but once I found some that it likes, the gun has been perfect.

I have the Mosquito and have almost 1500 rounds through it. I haven't noticed it being particularly fussy about ammo, but I do not buy the Remington rubbish. No problems with Federal, CCI or Aguila. It will not cycle with SS--of course--but what semi-auto will. It comes with two different springs--one for lighter, less powerful loads--and one for faster, more powerful loads. I have a FTEject or FTFeed every 150-200 rounds. It almost never locks open after the last round, but that's no big deal to me. I bought the red-dot scope for it from Cheaper Than Dirt (about $120) and it makes shooting that much more fun. I have found the weapon to be VERY accurate and reliable. I considered the Walther when I bought it, but the Walther feels and looks like a toy, whereas the SIG is like a 7/8 scale P226. It even has a slide mounted safety (I personally don't care, but my wife likes the extra "security").
I would highly recommend the Mosquito. As always, YMMV.

This is my ammo of choice as well. At $5.17 per 100 from Natchez, the CCIs are plenty affordable and I have always been satisfied with CCI's ammunition.
I just got a P22 about a month ago and I love this little pistol. I heard all the rants about this and that but I have yet to have a jam with it. I personally don't think the SIG is worth the extra money. I also have a Gemtech Outback II can in the works. Talk about fun.

After reading GT for weeks, I decided to buy the P22. I went to the store, put it in my hand and immediately realized it was not for me. It just didn't feel right. I decided to just but a new upper for my Ruger.
The next week, my wife bought me a Sig Mosquito. I almost had her take it back because I heard how "terrible" they were. Well, 500 rounds later, I LOVE it. NO malfunctions yet. ZERO. Feels great in the hand.
Buy what you like. (having said that, it's hard to beat a Ruger MK)

Walther P22 all the way. I shoot one 5 days a week and put over 550 rounds though it during that time w/out any problems.
I've seen lots of .22 sigs fail to eject and I am constantly asked to help remove the casing.

I had a walther p22 but sold it. It was a fairly fun gun to shoot, but I had plenty of jams with it using almost every type of .22 ammo. The casings would also eject all over the place including directly back into your face. It was also not very accurate in my experience. The grip was also tiny, but I have larger hands. With the money I made selling it, I bought a .22 conversion slide for my 1911 which has been flawless and insanely accurate. I never have regretted selling off my P22, where as I have regretted selling some of my others.

I went through this very dilema...
Mosquito or Walther P22?
Saw all of the bashing at both on the forums, and figured the feel of the Mosquito is better for my needs since the P22 is so small, good for a kid, but the Mosquito was a better choice to get my wife comfortable with Glocks.
Feels more substantial, I use CCI mini-mags and although at first, had a few FTFs and jams, but then started to keep it clean and haven't had any problems since.
I really like it for cheap range shooting along side the 9mm.
I have heard the P22 is good for this too, but again, the Mosquito just feels better to me.
I have a Ruger III as well. Good, very reliable, but not near as good a feel.

Both of your chosen models have too many problems to even consider buying one.
If a MkIII won't work---how about a 22/45? They generally are a bit lighter--depending on configuration.
Single Six might be too heavy too----but the Bearcat is a sweet little gun.
