View Full Version : S&W .357 revolver
I realize that there are good .357 revolvers made by other companies, but I am a fanboy of S&W when it comes to revolvers.
Basically, I am asking which S&W .357 models in a 4 inch barrel should I be looking at. I like the 686 of course, but are there any other models I should take a look at?
Any insight or help is appreciated as always.
The 327 is pretty handy.... extra shots.
If you're looking for a revolver in the slightly smaller K Frame you could give some thought to a blued Model 19/stainless Model 66 (with adjustable sights and ejector rod shroud) or a blued Model 13/stainless Model 65 (fixed sights, no ejector shroud). If you're looking to go to the bigger N frame you could think about a Model 28 or Model 27 (the 27 has a polished blue finish)
S&W has a a good variety of 686's to choose from. If you really like that particular model, they have several to choose from.

...and then there's the 386!

really depends on how much 357 you are going to be shooting. if you are mainly going to shoot 357 then i would opt for the L or N frame guns as they are stouter than a K frame. i shoot mostly 38s through my S&W 357s so i opted for a K frame with 3" barrel. i personally think for a range gun the model 586 or 686 with a 4" barrel are great all around guns. i listed some model for you below those are the ones i could think of off the top of my head.
K frame models- 19/66, 13/65
L frame modesls- 586/686
N frame models- 28, 27, 627

I LOVE my 686+, it may be close to the perfect gun.
627
8 shot .357 that uses moon clips. I want one pretty badly myself.

I like the 586 and 686.
I would have to agree. Personally, these two models are the best fit for me. Comfort is #1.

Early 686 or 28-2.
Don't over look the j-frames either.
Model 60 and 640.
IMO the 4" N frame .357 is the best balanced handgun in existence.

I've always wanted a Skeeter-esque 5" M27.

+1, balance with the 6" barrel is great, longer sight radius makes for deadly point shooting and it's extremely fast/accurate on multiple targets. It was one of my carries on a recent extended trip to San Antonio, the old design Remington factory 125 SJHPs still get the job done.
For 4" barrel, try out the new release M27, I know the 6" version was good for 200yds; a few decades back.

I bought a 6" 28-2 and I second this statement. But I still love all my 686's!

I disagree. It takes a back seat to the 5 inch M27

Exactly!

The 27 IS an N-Frame

For the comment about balance, I was referring to the barrel length, not frame size. All the S&W Model 2X guns are N frames.
The 5 inch M27 seems to balance wonderfully in the hand with a set of target grips on it.

I see, said the blind man. My own preference is that same N-Frame, but 6" barrel.
P. S. Your gun is beautiful!

Me too
really depends on your intended application. the 340pd makes a lot better pocket gun than does the 686. i have smith revolvers in .22, .38, .357, 10mm, .45 acp and .45 colt. my next revolver will be a 686 SSR.
Better?

The N frame with good grips makes .357 mag recoil a pleasant experience.
