View Full Version : What are some hand guns you regret to buy?
What are some of hand guns you guys ever regret to buy? My regret was my Beretta Neo 22. While I have zero complain about the gun, it work fine and feel good in my hand. I really wish I kept the money($300 include tax, dros) and bought another glock or cz75 or cheap 1911(RIA). After about 1k rounds, I just realize, 22 don't have the "gun feel" for me. And if I ever feel like shooting a 22, I can alway rent one at my range and their ammo won't be too expensive any way.
So that was my regret and reason. What are your regrets?

French made Manurhin PPK as a CCW. Very unreliable and definitely not worth the price for a shooter. Should have just gotten a Bersa for less.
I bought an EAA (Tanfoglio) Witness P, and it's an ugly cheap looking piece of crap. I read lots of good things about it, but none of them were true! LOL
It's a polymer frame, but unlike my Glocks, it really feels like a cheap piece of plastic.

ya the polymer frame witnesses are absolute garbage but the steel framed ones are worth their weight in gold

Mossberg 500 and Interarms PPK.
Mossberg was my first firearm - the heatshield popped off after the 5th round fired. I never cleaned the thing, so after a few hundred rounds it stopped cycling. Then it stopped firing. Eventually it got stolen - I don't miss it.
PPK was unreliable - was my first pistol and I would not trust it. Sold it.
glock 23, liked the compact size but just couldnt get used to the grip. rather than take a belt sander to it, i traded it. hopefully someone else is having success with it.

Taurus PT111 Millennium Pro Titanium 9 mm. What a complete POS.
The slide retaining pin actually fell out when I was shooting it. Luckily, Davidsons agreed to take it back and give me full credit for another gun.

I could probably list others. All but the Golan are still in my possession. None have caused me problems, then just don't get shot and don't "fit" with my "collection."
The Springfield Compact (now mercifully discontinued).
All it takes is one bad gun to ruin a company for life. I keep reading glowing reports about this Springfield or that, but I keep reliving my Springfield Compact experience...couldn't get through two mags without a FTF or FTE. Customer service called me a limp-wrister and said that "OF COURSE" it would take "AT LEAST" 500 rounds through the piece before it would work properly...what the hell were you thinking, you utter lump of goat feces?
I keep looking longingly at the Springfield Champion (which is pretty much the Compact, gussied up) and for some perverse reason I still WANT ONE! I wonder what's wrong with me?

I agree on PT145 - finally sold mine today. Nothing wrong mechanically, but too cheap for me to carry and not the greatest plinker. I just had no use for it. I do own some guns i barely use, but at least they are conversation or show pieces. This one is neither - I felt like it was polling my collection.

Didn't do much for my opinion of Springfield, and I traded it...

My PT145 used to get carried alot. But, one time, something happened to the striker and it wouldn't work. I had neglected to clean the gun and let it go for 2 months. One night I took a notion to clean it and unloaded, triple checked, then dry fired. Only thing was it was obvious the striker was not being released. It appears the trigger was slipping of the striker without releasing it. I cleaned and lubed and never had this happen again. But it shook my confidence in the gun.
I've often toyed with the idea of liquidating most of the guns I don't use and getting one or two really nice genuine collector grade pieces. A super nice original Luger, maybe. A Colt Python. A Diamondback. A registered magnum. Colt SAA. When I was in high school, I had an interest in samurai swords. Wouldn't mind having a really nice 150-200 year old (or older) blade, but these things make Colt SAA collecting look like a cheap venture. Prices for the WWII produced military issue swords are roughly equivalent to what a Python would bring.
Only problem is that when I do get rid of something, eventually I end up thinking that I wished I never let it go.
Skyy cpx 9mm, paid too much, and it's not reliable
double stack 1911 built on a para frame, not reliable, and the person who built it used really cheap parts

star BM 9mm, just not a very fun gun to shoot
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, I have one of those. Haven't shot it yet (one of those latest round of imports). Bought it on recommendation from a gunsmith I know and who's opinion I respect. Usually, he tells me something's a good buy, it is. Should be a good platform for 9mm. It's a heavy gun. Concealable; you just have to use a belt holster. Parts are going to be a pain in the future.
Another gun I'll add to the list of purchases I regret: Browning BDM 9mm. It's the 2 tone version that looks very much like the Hi-Power Practical. No bad experiences with this gun and I got it for a steal (already been offered double what I paid for it). I think I'll keep it a while longer. Very slim 15 shot 9mm.

I can't say I regret any. I don't buy junk. If I buy a firearm, it's not gonna be from the bargin bin.
I believe, if you spend the money for a quality firearm, you won't likely regret it. That's unless you're spending money you don't really have to spend.

HS-2000 9mm. My first handgun. It is the daddy of the XD. Springfield purchased the company, retooled, added $150 or so to the price and put two cannon on it. I like the XDs, but this gun would stovepipe, FTE, FTF, and had horrible accuracy.

A Hi-Point .45 for $140. It blew up in my hand on the 50th round. They replaced it at no charge, but the new one just sits in the gun safe. I'll probably never shoot it again. I won't even sell it to someone else!

I think it's just because it's a small gun and I find small guns to be uncomfortable to shoot since I have gorilla paws. It's a shame, I like the gun and it feels pretty good in my hands, but I just don't enjoy shooting it. I'm planning on having the sharp edges smoothed to see if that improves things
Guns I regret buying:

Funny, I was just discussing the Sigma .380 in another area of the forum. These guns were probably the worst S&W had ever made. The Sigma .380 and the Compact 9mm were completely different designs from the regular, Glock inspired full sized Sigmas. The end result was that the Sigma .380 badly damaged the full sized already delicate reputation just as the model series was starting off. It still hasn't gotten away from the stigma of the early guns, particularly the .380.

Same here. My first real "carry" weapon. I already had a 96 and loved it, then bought the 9000 for carry. Didn't work out so well.

I've got a Mossberg 500A Persuader 18.5" barrel with 8 round magazine tube and heatshield and it is awesome. I'm glad it has a heat shield as I put some rounds through that sucker before I put it down at the range! After a few hundred rounds, the whole gun is still intact including the heatshield. It is fun gun gun to shoot, easy to field and detail strip, and very durable. I've installed a SureFire weapon light forearm and it is loaded up with slug shells. It is my go to HD gun!
Getting back on topic, I don't really have any firearm I really regret puchasing/owning but I recently sold the first pistol I ever owned, a Taurus Pt-99 AFS. I bought a G19 before I replaced it and knew that in the near future I was going to get a G26 so the Taurus went to make room. I kind of miss it...
I regret buying a Taurus-92 .9mm many years ago.
Nothing wrong with it... just got replaced by a Sig 229.
Glock 38. It was my first handgun and I didn't know the difference between 45 acp and gap. I traded it for a 19.
I regret buying a Glock 32. Should have bought a .40 model. The .357 Sig ammo is sooo expensive that my Heckler & Koch USP gets twice as much range use as my Glock.

Mossberg 590, 2 trips to the factory and one to the GS still couldn't get it to run right. I'm not happy with a G21 I recently bought either, no quality pistol should develop a crack in the frame inside of 400 rounds.

When I was very young and very broke I purchased a couple cheap guns from Davis & Jennings. Later in life when I got wiser & more fininacally responsible I started buying better quality guns. The only gun that I regret buying lately is a Walther P22. It shot well with the right ammo but the safty would float in the middle of a mag and go safe. I tightened it up as much as I could an it still floates. Safe Queen

<--- savagely burned on the purchase of a Kimber Stainless TLE II. Beautiful gun but could never get it to work properly (FTF) even after a trip to Yonkers.
Colt King Cobra - I realize it was only supposed to be the bargain basement sub for a Python, but it sucked. Only bad revolver I've ever owned.
For autos, S&W 459, my first semi-auto duty gun, for which I traded a Colt Lawman Mk III and I'd much rather have the Lawman now (and it would be worth more).
other than those, which were my very early gun purchases, the rest have been more about guns I wish I had never traded.

You can just get a conversion barrel, or even a stock 23 barrel will work in your 32. Turn your .357sig into 40sw in 10 sec.

Kel-tec P3at, after about 300 rounds it'd FTE on the 2nd to last round on ever mag. Didn't feel like screwing with it, had a guy at work offer me 200 for it, and used it as a down payment on my G26. Problem is I still miss its size, even with my 642 smith.

No. 1 POS: Walther P22, couldn't get that thing to shoot one full mag without a hiccup.

The P22 has had some serious function issues. I cannot get my LCP to work for more than a box of ammo or less at a time.

#1 was the Walther P22 that had the safety lever constantly rotate while firing, that is the only gun I have ever sold.
#2 Springfield XD-45 Tactical. The gun is great and shoots well but it was pretty much a complete impulse buy and I didn't really need another .45 to feed. I've had it since September of last year and it has only been to the range once.
Gettin' set to pick up one of these... what's the beef? I'd like to know before I buy one.

If you search a bit more online, you will find out there are lots and lots unhappy owner of P22. Most common problem is FTE, FTFeed, and double chamber(which I guess it count as FTE). Just like Sig Mosquito, it only want powerful 22 ammo which will cost close to 9mm.
There are some p22 lovers claim the problems has been solved in the newer model. Definitely ask around before you buy one.

regarding the p22, my brother in law bought my sister one. We were firing it last weekend and on my watch it doubled chambered, that is, loaded a round and then apparently tried to load another. slide was semi-open.
He claimed that was the first time it had done it, but I didnt like that it happened to me on the third bullet my first time holding it.
shot a hundred more rounds hiccup free. Rapid fired it aswell and no problems. I liked it for a 22

Damn I'm glad I don't live where you do if good .22LR ammo costs close to 9mm! I can pick up a 50 PK of Stingers for $5.00.....and I don't think you'll find 9mm for that price anywhere.:wow:
And one problem that will never be solved with the P22 is the slide is made of pot-metal that gets deep gouges in it after just a few boxes of use. We sent ours back to S&W and they told us that was normal wear for a P22:shocked: After about three calls and escalating the matter to the higher ups, we got satisfaction by S&W replacing the damaged parts. We traded the gun without firing 1 more round through her.:crying:
Too bad...we really liked that little gun...but they really are very cheaply made.

I regret buying a Glock 32. Should have bought a .40 model.
Buy a factory .40 S&W barrel and drop it in the slide. They're available under $100. Your original mags will work fine and you'll be good to go with the exact equivelent of a Glock G23.

Too bad...we really liked that little gun...but they really are very cheaply made.
is walther owned by S&W?
someone else was telling me a while back that a bb gun company (maybe Gamo but not sure) was going to purchase walther.

The best thing about glocktalk is a thread like this. Todays gun shop owners either do not know this info or are selling the products with the highest profit margin. You will not get acurate info like this from most of them.
When the P-22 hit the scene AFS www.americanfirearmsschool.com was pushing it like it was the best 22 ever made. Truth is, they probably never shot one. Just bought a bunch at a good price and started pumping them out. They did the same with the Beretta 9000s.
they tried to sell me a P-22....No thanks, I went with the Mark III Hunter.

I had a G23 and it shot extremely well. I traded it in on a new G22 as I thought if the G23 was good, the G23 would be great.
The G22 was the biggest POS I ever bought. That includes the Llama .45 I bought in the 1980's.
I traded in the G22 on a H&K USP .45 and haven't been happier.
I went and bought the G23 back.

Yeh, the 50rd 22s price sucks around my area. It cost about $7 for stingers. Which Blazer Brass 9mm can be have for $8.97 from wal wart.
Thanks for the advice Solid & oldboob-- er,uh oldnoob (how 'bout that avatar).
Wow. Would like small-caliber auto for taking-out snakes in the yard without the neighbors thinking I'm starting WW3 over here.

Don't know about gamo, but S&W own Walther now. Which sucks, I can't get any P-1/ P-38 part from S&W.
Jennings .22 semi auto. It was a jamalicious POS. And I can't count the times I was crawling around under the kitchen table (where I had to do all my gun cleaning back then) trying to find that frikken firing pin spring. I paid 50 bux for it NIB at a gun show and sold it 6 years later at another gun show for 50 bux. Nothing lost but I can't figure out why I waited so long to dump it?!?!
Had a cheap .380 at one time and I can't even remember what kind it was. I think it was made in Brazil. It was awful. Finally gave it to a guy at work. Funny, he never did thank me....
All the rest have been great!

No kidding. I've got my g23c up for sale-- my preference was exactly the opposite.
The feel and my accuracy with the g22 is improved vastly over the g23c-- just not enough grip there.
With the conversion options & smaller profile, I wish I could go with the 23.
Anywho... good on you!

Ruger KP944- early failures to eject caused by loose extractor, still not 100% reliable, inaccurate, slide hard to rack. OTOH, my KP95 is great.

What a piece of garbage, My first pistol, I didnt know any better. Very expensive as well.
I regret very much buying that gun.

Sig 228: POS backed up by POS customer service.
KelTec SU-16CA: POS backed up by POS customer service.
DSA SA58 Carbine: POS as came from the factory but I didn't try their CS yet. Still regret the purchase.
Ruger P90: POS.
Para P14 Limited, early USP 9, Beretta 84, Russian Hi-cap Makarov, FM Hi-power and Rossi snub nose .357: Minor problems, still wish somebody would stop me from pulling the trigger on these. You live you learn. Well, P14 and Russian Mak were presents. (BTW E. German Mak is one of my favorite guns, I have three and have no intention of parting with them)

Actually none. From H&K, Beretta, Taurus (Autos and revolvers), Glock, Springfield (1911 & XDs), Ruger, Smith and Wesson, Kimber, Walther, Uberti, and even an old Spanish Ruby revolver, I don't regret any of them, even if I sold them....which I do regret.
I usually research a gun ALOT before I decide I may buy one. My compulsive buys are on deals on guns I've already researched some.
Okay, I did regret buying a Kahr PM-9. With barrel peening at under 500 rounds, and crappie C.S at the time I just sold it at a loss. But is the only one in around 30 hand guns that have gone through my hands/or still have that I regretted acquiring.
I'm selling my Beretta Vertec only cuz I thought I would get used to the grip angle more easily, and I never shoot it, and need the cash, nothing wrong with it at all though.

Taurus PT140. I have no idea what I was thinking when I bought that thing. The trigger is just plum awful & it wouldn't extract several makes of brass. I will give it credit for being light, having decent feel and it was fairly accurate.
Coincidentally I just dumped the PT140 this morning, traded it in on a G20. Interesting to note that the G20 has way less recoil than the PT140 did.

Taurus 92. Poor workmanship on the slide was chewing the frame apart.
Grendell .380 Broke in under 100 rounds. Customer service was a real PITA.
1st gun, Sig P226. Great gun if you have hands the size of the empire state building :) Nah, just the tree trunk grip/length wasn't for me. VERY accurate and it never malfunctioned. Mine was a w. german model.
Wilson CQB. Over hyped bigtime. Supposedly the best thing since sliced bread. Meh! No biggy
Kimber Stainless Target II, Meh, not a big deal really. I am not a fan of the 1911,though all the talk about them got me to rent one(which I loved and fired well) but it's not a keeper for me.
Taurus PT-145. Trouble from day one. Hehe, of course, my good friend/shooting mentor has one, his is flawless to this day. Mine dropped mags, wouldn't feed certain ammo, slide would open during firing etc. It was at Taurus longer than it was with me.
Honestly, SEVERAL people suggested a Beretta PX4 and a Glock 19 as first pistols. I'd have avoided a lot of "craving the right one" if I bought either of those two back in early '07 when I received my ccw permit. I have both now, but am keeping the 19C. The PX4 is a tick more accurate, but I like the size of the 19 and ease of follow up shots better on it.
That'll do it. Luckily, I Never owned anything disastrous!
General rule of thumb, if you do not like it, nor do you shoot it well, SELL IT!
Ruger P95 jamomatic pos and Ruger Mark 3 Hunter, it slams bullets into the feed ramp.
