Interesting AR design

If you pick up a copy of AR15 magazine (I'm talking about a publication, not the thing that holds cartridges!:supergrin:), on the cover is a most interesting design. It's an AR with TWO scopes! I can't remember their webpage address so I can't hotlink to it. The top of the rifle has an ACOG and tilted off to the right is something similar to this:

I wondered "what in the heck would a soldier need TWO aiming devices for?" The author said something interesting: the rifle serves a dual purpose function. The ACOG is to snipe targets from long distances. Simply tilting the rifle to the left a bit (from the user's POV) allows the use of the red dot sight for close quarters shooting. The author tried it and said although it takes some getting used to, he was able to engage targets from short and long distances by tilting the rifle. Upright: hit the target far away, close up: tilt, aim, fire. Amazing. Makes me wonder: does anyone know if the military has experimented with such a setup?

The three-gun competitive shooters have been doing this for a few years, IIRC. It makes weak-hand shooting with the angled sighting system almost impossible, though, so the .MIL wouldn't be too hot on that aspect.

It's an interesting concept that I may test on my long-range AR, eventually...

The setup is too new (red dot on top of ACOG) for the avg GI. PDS personnel in Iraq might have tried it by now tho. I'm sure it has been tested by gun range instructors.

The picture I saw was different. The red dot sight is not on top of the ACOG but diagonally on the right, between the ACOG and the carry handle. Like I posted, the user just tilts the rifle a little to the left to use the red dot sight.

Yeah there are many different type of ACOG. The link is one version of the setup you mentioned.

This is not an ACOG with the red dot on the top. It is a peice of metal that sticks out from the mount on the top scope and allows you to mount a red dot. To see it you simpley cant the rifle and look through it. You have two different scopes mounted at different angles, and just tilt the rifle to acess either scope.

Seen this idea before....the "stack the dot and the ACOG" appears to be the way the military has gone. Apparently some Special Forces types have gone that way from articles I have read.

The "cant the gun" version from 3-gun has been around for at least 2-3 years, i remember seeing pics of that kind of thing going on before I enlisted in the various 3-gun competition pictures I have seen.

I know what you are talking about and as mentioned, it has been used in 3-gun for a little while now. Also as mentioned it makes weak hand shooting akward due to the sight being angled the wrong way. The ACOG with the mini red dot on top makes it easy to use ambi.

There is also a mini red dot mount that mounts to a scope ring of a rifle scope (as in a full size scope, not an ACOG) that allows the shooter to have quick close in target acquisiton when using a large magnified optic (such as a 3-9X scope) just by shifting the head.

That's my first thought to, at a 45 or 90 degree angle to the right. It's also useful if the three-gun match designer decides to get evil, and they have that stage where you lay prone and shoot through an open slit that runs along the ground and there's a solid wall above.

That's why you need three optics. Seriously, with the light weight of some of the tiny aimpoint and dr optic type stuff out there, that would be feasible.

I saw it a few years ago. It was interesting and I considered it. However, my Eotech is good for minute of man shooting from 0-300 yards, so I see no need to adjust my carbine to it. I don't do 3 gun (yet?) and if I need something beyond 300 I'm grabbing something else.
