View Full Version : Outfitting A Tactical Shotgun
I Own Three Glocks... And know nothing about rifles & shotguns.
Based on a previous post, I've picked a Mossberg 500--attached.
Okay, please, just humor me...
How do I responsibly add a folding stock, laser, & weapon light to this shotty?
Links would be greatly appreciated!
This is for SD/HD only...
Useful advice will get full kudos on this techno shotty!

Well you have several options. I suggest you get a standard flashlight clamp that tightens on the magazine tube, and insert a Surefire Nitrolon or something similar. You can run a remote switch for it if you desire. As for a folding stock, I'd recommend the type that imitates an M4 collapsable stock.
One thing, I've had no luck with "Advanced Technologies" shotgun parts. The pistolgrip buttstock, magazine tube, and flashlight clamp sucked. The tube would compress with the light mount tightened down properly, causing the tube to malfunction and fail to feeds would occur. The buttstock is always coming loose, and the forward pump grip is really ugly. In all, a real dissapointment.
I'd get a surefire front grip for the flashlight, ditch the laser idea, as in the home, the light itself, will make a great aiming device, and put a Knoxx spec ops telescoping/recoil reducing stock on it. They make a folder, but it looks like azz.

Knoxx Spec Ops (http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=103192467)
I went with the 590 with 8 shot magazine and 20 inch barrel;
Mods;
Surefire M70 Tri rail foregrip $150.00
SideArmor Pic rail $50.00
Knoxx Breachersgrip $100.00 (I like it better than the SpecOps for maneuverability.)
Mesa aluminum 6 round carrier $65.00
The rail covers and hand stops are from Ergogrip.

I went with a light of my own creation….
I call it the MacGyver Light, and no….. there are no paper-clips or chewing gum involved… LOL (Please ignore the bayonet... whether you want one or not is purely personal preference, so I won't discuss it.)
http://www.boomspeed.com/guyver/ZZZZ00004.jpg
I purchased these items;
1 MiniMag AA Flashlight
1 TeraLUX MiniSTAR2 Extreme (100 Lumen) dome style LED, to handle the recoil and more than double the light output, while retaining a 6 hour + battery life… Pretty sweet.
2 Tacstar (AAMaglite to 1" polymer adapters)
1 One inch offset picatinny scope mount
1 TeraLUX TCS-1 End cap switch.
1 QD, Lever-Style riser, to allow quick removal/installation of the light.

Total: around $75 bucks.
It was an experiment, which is still in progress, but we shall see how the darn thing holds up…. Anyway… I already had the Surefire M70, triple rail fore grip to mount it on..
I believe you will be better off with the knoxx SpecOps and the Surefire though.

Add a Surefire fore-end light.
Get a Speedfeed, Hogue or other maker short length of pull stock.
Add XS Big Dot night sight front bead.
Ammo and training. You don't need a folding stock or a laser.
Someone and I think it is surefire that makes a laser/light combo for the shotgun. As for the folding stock I had one before I took it off and threw it where it belonged in the trash I hated it. When I had it down and shot the gun the recoil caused the stock to cut into my face.

forget the tactical doodads and go for practical.
add a buttstock of your choice (mossberg, knox spec ops, etc)
have it drilled and tapped for ghost ring sights
install a surfire forend
spend the extra money you were going to spend making it tactical and take a class to learn how to use it

Here's my practical/tactical 870:
- 20" Rem-choke barrel
- Scattergun Tech +2 mag ext
- Specter CQB sling

Everyone has their own preference, but I like my guns minimal/streamlined and without optics usually. My .17hmr does have a Nikon scope, it's the only scoped gun I own. I have flirted with the idea of an EOTECH or aimpoint on the AR, but I'd only have it on there for range time.
My guns look just like Steve In AZ's. I can't figure out any reason I would need a folding stock on my shotgun, unless I need to conceal it under my trenchcoat (with matching fingerless gloves ). I use a full stock on all 3 shotguns and 2 of my 3 AR's also have full stocks, but my S&W came with the collapsible, which is OK too. I don't know what I'd use a laser on a shotgun for. I can see the Surefire forends, but that's about the only add-on I'd use or recommend. However, just reading the word "shotty" makes me want to hit somebody (I visualize a little punk kid in baggy clothes), so your taste in guns may be much different than mine.
The best reasons for a pistol grip/folder would be storage and maneuverability. Even then, it's open to personal taste. If you want a folder.. get one, if you don't, don't... but don't let anyone else make your mind up for you... you have to live with your choices, no one else. Don't let the nay sayers turn you off.
I'm very happy with mine.

I do like the compactness of a collaspable stock, especially when I'm hiking with it on my back. I may get a Knoxx Specops, but not committed yet. Once I get off my lazy butt, I'm going to drill and install a sling swivel for the butt stock and get rid of the ugly velcro adapter as well.

I am a fan of simplicity when it comes to the combat trombone specifically. Sorry I do not have a pic. Mine is Mossberg 500 "Breacher" with installed "birdhead" grip from speedfeed inc. Short, simple and there are several scenarios (in and out of a vehicle in particular) where compactness is greatly appreciated. Only upgrades I felt necessary were a hi viz fiber optic sight bar (pics up light in a LOT of low light situations) and a sling.
THose who decry the pistol grip base it only on thier own limited experiences imo. The "birdhead" type I use has been in use with the US Marshall Service since the 1980's with NO complaints I am aware of. Wilson used to make a shotgun version under their "Witness Protection" models. Sadly, those are no longer options from Wilson.
If you want a truy compact, that you CAN fire from the shoulder with little practice and won't break your wrist, check out the birdhead at:

Imo it is the best kept secret in defense shotguns.
Just my .02 but otherwise I say KISS is better.

Better advice would be hard to come by.
Me, I sorta like ghost ring sights, but that XS Big Dot would be mighty fast to sight with. Between the Hogue and the Speedfeed I would probably go Speedfeed. There full size ammo in the stock stocks are just a touch long for me, and the Hogue I used to have on my 500 seemed just a bit too short. The Hogue is a 12" LOP and I think Speedfeed's shorter stock is 13" LOP

That gun should be tapped to accept an optic rail. Put a rail and a Burris Fast Fire red dot and you're done.

Thanks Eddie.
Ray--no problem. It really comes down to what you want, while trying to avoid things you don't need. For me weight is a major factor--I like my guns light and simple, and 15 years in the Army has taught me that packin a weapon 24/7 changes your priorities a little. All of a sudden you find that new "cool" accessory is diggin in your back, and your practical side takes over.
I'll echo those that favor keeping it simple. All that shotgun needs is a buttstock to replace the lone pistol grip and a sling.
Maybe a flashlight depending on your HD scenarios.

For the laser/light I use the Streamlight TLR-2 attached to the magazine tube.
