I have a Glock 19 for SD. I have Speer GoldDot 9mm luger 115 gr. gdhp AND Hornady 9mm Luger 147gr jhp/xtp. We live in rural MN so I really don't have to worry too much about excessive penetration, going through other homes in the area. Which weight and brand is best for SD.

Both are great, but the XTP will always give deep penetration, I have had a few GDs for unknown reasons fail to penetrate as deep as XTPs but still killed just fine.

In GD, I would rather have 124 gr +p, and your G19 will love them...I'm not a fan of 147 gr, regardless of brand, or XTP.

+1 on the Speer Gold Dot 124 +p

+2 on the GD. Especially the 124+p. It is what many law enforcement agencies use for a reason.

Speer GD have a very long and proven record.

Between these two coices, the answer is obvious; the Hornady XTP. The XTP bullet is stellar. I would choose the 147gr. XTP over the 115/124gr. +P GD anyday. Most of the GD boys are just riding on a bandwagon.

Rugby
The problem with the XTP is it lacks newfangled points. The gold dot is a good bullet but the XTPs I tested on glass, wood and metal all expanded and kept jackets on when they expanded.
I just discovered BlackHills 124 grain +P XTP loaded ammo that duplicates CorBons old load they made back in the mid 90s. I just started loading my mags with it a month ago and I am very happy to have that laod available to me again....

Yes, those XTPs have a pretty serious following. If you want max penetration with so-so expansion, but certainly not the worst expansion either, the XTP could be the bullet for you!

1) Controlled Expansion
XTP™ bullets are famous for their ability to expand reliably across a wide range of velocities. The XTP Magnum™ bullet was specially built to withstand incredible velocities, and still deliver controlled expansion and weight retention. Special features in the nose facilitate and control expansion on impact. Others, like the cannelure, ensure the jacket and core remain locked solid during expansion.
2) Terminal Penetration
XTP™ and XTP Magnum™ bullets consistently deliver the deep, terminal penetration needed for one-shot kills.
3) Superb Accuracy
The XTP™ is one of the most accurate pistol bullets ever made, and it’s just as accurate in your muzzleloader. Good shooters with quality barrels can consistently achieve sub 1-inch groups at 100 yards.
4) Easy To Load
No additional lubricants or patches are necessary with Hornady’s XTP™ bullet/sabot combinations. Because they load easier, you can reload for fast follow-up shots.
Most of the GD boys are just riding on a bandwagon.
Gold Dots? Well, in the expansion department they're ok, when loaded up in 9, 40, or 45. Penetration is good to excellent, especially through barriers.

TECHNOLOGY . . .
Nose profiled for smooth function in semi-autos
Both core and jacket are notched for uniform expansion
Cavity tuned to the job
Pure copper jacket bonded to core
Jacket thickness very uniform
Alloyed core for barrier penetration without sacfricing expansion
Square heel for accuracy

My experience with Golden Sabers has more/less shown them to be an XTP with slightly more expansion, and a tad less penetration, at least in the nonbonded rounds.
