View Full Version : Pistol grip... Yes or No?
I have alway resisted the urge to try a tactical pistol grip stock on my 870. It's alway seemed kind of silly yet there are so many companies that continue to make these... most notably the Knoxx Spec-Ops adjustable stock.
So what's the attraction or advantages over the standard design? I'm have mine set up with an 18" barrel 870P configuration.
And, while I'm asking, what's it like shooting buckshot using only a pistol grip like the Pachmayr grip? Wrist pain? Thanks everyone.

Pistol grip with stock: Yes.
Pistol grip alone: Only for breaching.
With a stock, it allows similar grip and feel to most modern assault rifles (good for training compatibility if your normal weapon is an M4 or something). Good retention, easy to hold at the low ready and helps keep the weapon up when loading one-handed while keeping the weapon pointed towards a possible threat or at least downrange.
I would never use a pistol-grip only unless it was for breaching, where you're basically touching the target. A folding stock allows the same short length but rapidly becomes a stocked weapon (a second or two) which you can actually hit with.

Yeah, what he said.
A pistol grip just feels so much more natural to me.
I've got the Spec-ops on my 870 and it is very comfortable. Easy to hold in 1 hand and still have control over the gun. I've shot PG only guns and I won't ever own one, except maybe as a last ditch effort gun.
I just don't like them.

Thanks, Mike... how much does the Spec-Ops reduce recoil with buckshot in your estimation? I know what the website says but opinions differ.
I have an 870P with the Spec Ops reduced recoil system and the reduction is more than significant. I have shot about 25-30 rounds of 00 buck with no discomfort at the time or the next day. I have shot 65 rounds of bird shot and 5 rounds of tactical slugs in competition, also with no discomfort. And I have an injured right shoulder unrelated to shooting...nonetheless, no discomfort.

When it first came out a gunwriter took it to I think Gunsite for a shotgun course to test it out. Denis Prisbey (SP?) I think it was.
He figured he'd break it or at least give it a good whacking. Everyone else mostly fired birdshot (normal) I think he got free ammo from a company and shot nothing but buck and slugs. He said recoil was equivalent to a 5.56mm rifle and he was comfortable shooting several hundred rounds a day with no bruises....
Pretty good deal I'd say. I don't "need" a Knoxx and haven't had a chance to try one myself, 12ga recoil has never particularly bothered me in a pumpgun. On most shotguns I prefer a traditional stock type, if it was a working gun I might switch over to the M4 stock for gun similarity and because of the collapsing stock fitting armor better (I already use an M4 at work).

if you want just a pitol grip, get the Pachmyer (sp?), in my opinion, it is the only really comfortable PG. not talking pistol gripped stock, just a pistol grip....but do agree with the poster above about the butler creek.

I didn't like the idea of a pistol grip stock for my shotgun either. I grew up using the standard style stock. I broke down and got one for my border patrol. I haven't looked back. I personally like the pistol grip. I find I have more control and better accuracy using it.
OK, I really appreciate all the help and advice.
It reduces it enough to notice... I don't know how to figure how much. But it does help. I'm not bothered by recoil but I wanted a PG stock and I broke an ATI stock rather easily, so I bought the Knoxx. Glad I did.

Bein' a country boy like myself, I like most of my firearms to have a regular stock on them. I like the AR with a pistol grip, and the AK, but they feel natural that way. A shotgun, I'm loads faster with a regular stock, well because thats what us country boys shoot skeet with and ducks, rabbits you name it. It shoulders faster to me, and I can carry it by the pistol portion (not a pistol grip, but you know what I mean) down low, and pull it up much faster in one motion. YMMV.

Chuck, that's also been my experience although I've never tried a pistol grip on anything but my pistols. It's kind of interesting to me that the AR has a pistol grip but the Mini-14 does not. However, that may not be a good comparison.
Hey Roy!
You know how I feel about the Knoxx Spec-Ops. I really like it.
I'd say it reduces the recoil about 30%. A lot of folks will tell you that it reduces recoil 80-90%. I really don't think that's accurate. 30% is good enough for me. I'm not a big fan of recoil.
The pistol grip feels good on the Spec-Ops, too.
Good luck!

Hey deadite, I'd love to try the Spec-Ops stock... maybe some day. I got thumped pretty hard by multiple rounds of buckshot several days back. Can't believe it didn't leave a bruise.
I'm not a fan of recoil either... not that much anyway.

It's too bad we don't live near each other. I'd let you try mine out. :)

Chuck, thanks for the offer but Amarillo is an 8 hr drive from my location, then it's about 3 hr more to Raton, NM. But I do appreciate the offer. :wavey:

Chuck, are you familiar with these folks? (http://www.rosssportinggoods.com/) I don't know if you're anywhere near this place, but they're good people.
Have a nice 4th.
