The last ambi safety I had (I don't remember whose it was) had a lot of flex on the right side pad (left thumb). I'm a lefty and I use this side almost exclusively. Which manufacturer makes the strongest ambi safety?
Are there any tips on how to make these fit better and more snugly?

I don't know which one is stronger, and I have used Brown, Wilson, and STI, and CMC. A couple of things I do-take the safety out and see how the tongue/groove fits. I put them together and I press fit it HARD, so hard that when I re-install the right side, I have to put on a tiny drop of lubricant then "tap" it in with a screwdriver handle. The less flex between them the start with, the better. Next, I make sure that my right grip panel has enough material on top to support the right paddle at the bottom of the travel rather than the fit between the parts being the only support.
Maybe a gunsmith or knowledgeable person can help more, but I've never seen an expert address this and the above two points solved my difficulty.
Ed Brown makes some good stuff.

The Kings and Kimber ambi safeties have the right side retained by a head on the hammer pin and seem more stable than the usual Swenson knockoff held by a lip under the grip panel.
Sheepdog has a good point about using the clearance in the Swenson type grip panel to control lever movement. There is one custom gunsmith who drives a stop pin into the receiver to be sure it does not overtravel.

I've owned Colt's, Wilson's, Brown's, STI's, King's and CMC's, and STI's is the strongest currently made "tactical" ambidextrous safety for the 1911, IME.
It's billet, FWIW.
The original Colt's ambi safety is quite good too, but it's a compact example, without any extended shelf or lever.
