View Full Version : 9mm 147 Grain HST
Have you ever thought you posted a question only to check back for responses and you can not find your question? That just happened to me so let me apologies just in case it magically appeases as it disappeared. My question was is there 9mm 147 grain ammunition that matches the Federal 147 grain HST load as far a velocity, penetration and expansion? I would like to try the HST but can not find a store in my area that has it, (Greenville SC) plus I understand its for Law Enforcement use only.

not sure about the velocity but for expansion and penetration:
Golden sabre 147gr
Speer Gold dot 147gr
Winchester Ranger-T 147gr (ra9t)
That said there are some great places online to find HST and these others. Some of which have already been listed.
HST is a restricted sale item so you will not find it at most Federal retailers. Most of those retailers will not have even heard of this ammo unless they keep up on LE ammo.
I checked cheaper than dirt and they do not have any HST. ATG and Streichers have some stock. I sold out and have been waiting on Federal.:crying:

Wetpack (out of 2" barrel S/W 940 snub):
Recovered: Blazer 12" center, upper left WWB 8 3/4", upper right Ranger 5 3/4", lower left Gold Dot 6 1/2", lower right HST 5 1/4"
To get equivalent gel penetration, multiply by 3/2... YMMV
Blazer: 18", WWB 13.125", Ranger 8.625", GD, 9.75", HST 7.875"

Dandapani, you can prepare the wetpack so that penetration numbers are more closely aligned with gel.

Some assclown decided it was PC to have a policy not to sell it to civilians, there is a good amount floating around (links that others have posted). On paper it is great stuff, functions great in my G19 and is what I carry. It is the best 9mm (IMO), unless you need something that is good through windshields (mostly an LE requirement).

I ordered mine form ammo to go. At $20 for 50, it blows away anything available locally. (Both in price and IMO performance)
BTW, it is marketed to LE only, not restricted to by law.

This "LE only" stuff was discussed at lengh recently here and someone called Federal directly and asked them.
Their answer was very straight forward: We service our LE clients first, but the HST ammo is not resricted by us (Federal) to LE only sales. Many places stock and sell HST ammo to the general public and do so with our blessing. (words to that effect)
Ammuntiontogo.com seems to have the best prices currectly. I just recieved 500rds of the 9mm 147gr at a great price with fast delivery!
Federal will not sale HST to any dealer that will sale it to the general public.

I was telling a buddy at work that I picked up some .45 HST ammo at the last gun show and he said HST's are loaded on the light side. Is there any truth to that? :dunno:

Depends on what he calls light.

Ammunitiontogo.com sells it buy the ton with no restrictions fron Federal.
Before making blanket statements, you should check your information and source first.

I sold HST by the tons until I got cut off for not restricting the sales. Now I have to find creative ways of getting it via other sources.
ATG eventually will have to stop also. They just have not be caught yet.

if you look at muzzle velocity, federal's .40 HST loads are below other competitor rounds such as speer gold dot (i know, same company) and winchester ranger, just to name a couple. federal does it that way for a reason, because they have done substantial testing to find the optimum muzzle velocity to achieve the best results from the HST bullet
bullet manufacturers do a lot of testing to tailor the muzzle velocity to achieve optimum performance from their rounds. this is the reason i will no longer buy self-defense ammunition from mom and pop ammo companies like doubletap and buffalo bore
hardcast loads for woods carry is a different matter. for that niche, i wouldn't hesitate to use doubletap or buffalo bore

That's very true, however if you are using the ammo in a shorter barrel than what say Fed. designed it for............:whistling:
