Some ranges are closed for lead clean up. Check the PGC web site, they should list the ones closed.

It seems some have been closed, never to open again.:steamed: Nearest open one to me is probably 2 hours away. Very frustrating.

Thanks for the update.
The story i heard was that they were closed for 6-7 weeks for range clean up,
taking all the lead out.

You're right. They are closed. I just got this reply:

-------------
"We are hoping to have it reopened by October, as long as weather does not slow down the progress of the work, which includes lead remediation and installation of additional safety measures."
-------------
Bad news but pretty responsive. I am not used to quick replies from any gov't office.

By the way...

They told me that anyone could can contact the Southeast Region Office at 610-926-3136 to offer assistance.

It's SGL 43 (French Creek).

Maybe somebody (not me) would like to organize something?

I personally spoke to a PGC this weekend,
the range will re open, it is in fact having the lead removed.

Will see they never closed the range this long.
Hope they get it open before deer season.Seems real odd they closed three ranges all at the same time.

How many ranges can you clean at the same time?

I've been going to the Broad Mountain range in Jim Thorpe or the range on route 100.

Both are closed now for lead removal. :steamed:

The range out off of Rt 118, SGL #206 is also closed. Nothing like closing all the ranges during the busiest time of the year instead of during the slow spring months.

UPDATE
SGL 43 (French Creek) = Closed still.

I didn't even get my hunting license yet due to the fact I have no easy way to sight in all my hunting rifles and shotguns and muzzle loaders and flintlocks and hunting handgun....GOD I hate the game commission they need to be closed and reopened under new management .

+1 to that. Poor management and planning for sure. They must be wasting money like mad too. I heard recently that they get bazillions of dollars a year from mineral rights leases of state lands and I'm wondering where it all goes and why they always want license fee increases.

I called the local state game comission office at 09:00 this morning and the woman told me that SGL #43 reopened earlier this week. Straight from the horses mouth.

I just got back from the range, and it is open. Unfortunately, the two 25 yard uprights have been pushed back to 50 yards, and the the ones that were at 50 yards are gone entireley. The shotgun range has also been closed indefinitely due to the fact that it was never meant to be used as a shotgun range.

So in short; no more 25 yard shooting or using shotguns with anything other than slugs.

makes sense to me, I used to help maintain that range as part of my job and the 25 yard target stands were shot up more often than the 50 or 100's. personally I'm glad they forbid shooting at the shotgun range (which as you said was never actually supposed to be a range) if anything would of gotten that place closed down it would have been all the crap people left there (there was probably 6"+ layer of broken clay birds covering a 25 yard by 50 yard section of ground)

if you guys had any idea the amount of work and money that goes into maintaining that range you'd wonder why they didn't just shut the whole thing down years ago.

I'm up at the range all the time collecting trash and taking down left targets at the end of the day.

The range should stay the same.
You should need a hunting license in order to use the range. At least I know you have had a safety course with firearms then, and helped pay for the range. It shouldn't be a public range since most of the public will just dump all over it.Hunters on the other hand would respect and take care of it.
