Just need a good round and weight for outdoor protection, preferably the hottest .45 ACP that can be safely fired from a Mil-Spec 1911A1.

Hornady TAP, 230 gr +P - slow to expand, good velocity for a big ol rock...

Wouldn't FMJ be better?

I always had good luck using the Remington 230 grain Golden Sabre in the 1911's I used to own.

230gr. WWB is all I feed my .45's.

I'm sorry I think I worded my question wrong. By outdoor protection I mean hiking and using it as a mountain gun. Whoops!

I keep 230 gn +P HST in my nightstand. In the woods depending upon what you are going to come across, you might want some 230 FMJ.
.45 Super!

OK...in my case I was going for a little levety...actually Zombie Steve is...again IMHO...correct in choosing the Hornady TAP for hiking in the great outdoors...if you're going to carry a M1911.
I keep a Springfield Mil-Spec in my truck and I have 8 rounds of Speer 230gr GDHP in it and 2 extra mags loaded with 230gr ball. I figure if the first eight don't get it done I don't care what I have as long as I have some extra ammo.
My CCW gun is a Les Baer TRS and I carry Speer 230gr +p (DT) and 2 extra mags with factory 230gr GDHP in a Mag holder.
The way I see it just about any 45 JHP in the "right" area will get the job done.

It really doesn't matter alot as to which .45 acp round you carry because any of them will do the job if you hit the target. Expansion is great IF it occurs, but if it doesn't, there is still a big fat bullet making a big hole. I was issued Remington Golden sabers for many years, but I would have still been confident with my weapon if we carried ball ammo.
