I have just about reached the point to not read any post referring to a Springer or a shottie.
What is the point in this stupid "shorthand"?
I don't expect any logical answer so don't give it much thought.

The stupid shorthand comes from stupid people attempting to impress their stupid friends.

Then they wonder why they're stuck working at McDonalds all their lives because they're too stupid to figure out employers can't understand their employment application for a job that pays more than minimum wage.

The instant-gratificatio generation has no self respect for themselves or others. If they did, they would express themselves in a cognitive manner.

As for "Springers," I know there are Springer spaniels, but haven't heard of the Springer Firearms Company. Nor have I heard of the Shottie Corporation.

It's really pathetic that Americans are becoming like this guy:

I don't do that myself, but it never really bothered me that much when others have done it unless that person was otherwise annoying, in which case I tend not to hang around long anyway.

I don't call my car a 'Stang either. It's "my car" or "the Mustang".

I generally find that using whole words doesn't slow me down too much, so I just go for it.

I had never heard the "word" shottie untill my friend started playing Halo 2 on xbox live. While I agree with the logic, sometimes people take it way too far. Should I refer to my carry pistol as my "Sig Sauer P239 chambered in .40 Smith and Wesson" or is it ok to just say it's my "Sig 239 in .40?"

I guess I have no respect for myself or anyone else. I suppose that means I should quit my job and go find a McJob that better fits my intelligence.

I agree that most abbreviations are simply a display of ignorance, but everything has a place and a time. I would never think of using the "gangsta" terminology for anything concerning real firearms, but what would HALO be without "shotties and 'naids"? Think of the humiliation that Master Chief would go through describing his running riot without the fun words. =)

I will use nicknames every now and then for my weapons. Bushy for the Bushmaster and Mossy for the Mossberg. I also refer to my GLOCKS as G19, G21, etc., not GLOCK Model 19 and GLOCK Model 21. It makes things faster/easier, kinda like lol or gtfo.

I really don't get what all the fuss is about. Do you always reference a Chevy as a Chevrolet? Have you ever refered to Jack Daniels as Jack? How about calling a magazine a mag? I could go on but you get my point.

If using shorthand is a pet peeve I have no idea how you can stand to use the internet let alone read internet forums.

What about "wheel gun" or "scatter gun?" Each a classic reference from the West. I'm sure people who used that language in those times were referred to as savages. I am very sorry to inform you, but if a language doesn't evolve, it dies. Language is always changing and evolving. Maybe you should revert back to old english and see how seriously you are taken.

The cops' vocabulary was limited to "dude" and "mother-******er." The women in the class were "c*nts."

Reading American literature is more appealing than listening to grunting, foul-mouthed, tattooed, knuckle-draggers with a badge and a pistol.

Your gross stereotyping is appauling and obviously reflective of your I.Q. You're on the same level as the gun grabbers saying that everybody carrying a gun is either looking for trouble or causing it. Categorizing me as a knuckle dragging ape with a gun is a great way to get yourself written off as a fool.

Concise truncation doesn't bother me... Done correctly, the meaning remains clear, while either saving syllables or eliminating confusion (particularly over a radio). And, honestly, I haven't the nerve to suggest otherwise to my military friends, who outnumber and considerably outweigh me.

It's casual lingo that seems to cause more harm than good, particularly when it's too vague or outlandish for an outsider to understand. I've lost a lot of friends to cockney.

Despite what it may seem online, I don't think the sky (and collective IQ of mankind) is falling. The hoi polloi has always been there, however it was much easier to ignore them in the past, thanks to geographic and social boundaries... If I don't want to listen to Mall Ninja chatter, I simply stay out of arcades or RPG parties, and congregate with people I know. However, the internet gives EVERYONE an easy means to voice their opinions - for better or for worse - generally unbound. :dunno:

I feel the same, but I mostly read Glocktalk for the stupidity. If I wanted information I'd be over at Brian Enos' place, which is where I go if I have a real question. I like it here because it's a trainwreck of nuttiness with very little useful information being exchanged. I don't like people who say "shotty" (the people, not just the word) but it's fun to read what they post. Kind of the Jerry Springer Show of gun boards.

Big deal.

However as a joke I have started referring to my AK and AR by pronouncing their names (as in my "Ack" an "Arr"). I just do it to be stupid on purpose though.

BTW for those who get all hung up on nicknames, it is GLOCK (TM). All caps, get it right!

I also do call my carry gun a "Springer" Why? Because Springfield Armory gets to be a PITA to type (oops I used a common internet acronym, I so sorry!!) and because it's full name is Springfield Armory 1911-A1 Champion Leightweight Operator.

The part that really bothered me (when I first heard it) was that there are Springers; Springer Waffen is a very old and respected firearms manufacturer in Austria that made/makes high end weapons. Nowdays run by Christian Springer (4th generation gunsmith). Last time I was there he showed me a 20ga SxS his grandfather had built prior to WWII. I still regret not buying it.

Now I just look at the folks using that as shorthand as somewhat illiterate and lazy.

This gets to the point as to why I started this, which has turned out to be pretty funny.

US society has degraded into the gutter. So called "rap music" is not music, it's not worth the raw material to produce it. The language, on TV, radio, movies and just out in public, is not very high class, to say the least. It's not a time that I would chose to bring up children in. Babies come into this world with nothing but the greatest innocence. It doesn't take long for their associations to do away with that. By the time they get to school, it seems an awful lot just go to selling crack. Comedy has to be composed of 4 letter gutter words or I guess it's just not funny.

Schools have just gotten to the point that they are used for day care and free meals. Doesn't seem to be much "educating" taking place. This country has been settled by people from just about any country, in the world. Over 300 years, all these people learned to speak English. The "Hispanic" has been the only class that cannot learn English and have to be taught in Spanish. They don't seen to attach a very high need for an education.

If the people, in Texas ever find out how understaffed all the state prisons are for guards, they wouldn't sleep too well. The state doesn't pay a living wage for their guards. My boy worked one for a while. He was a Sergent or he couldn't have afforded to work there. They work 12 hour days, Texas heat, no A/C. He said it wasn't too comfortable to be locked up in the dining hall with 200 convicts. They had a guard there that was 84 years old. If you are breathing, you have a job. Don't know what got me on this.

Don't think, for a minute that I let this sort of stuff bother me. I learned a long time ago that I wasn't going to change the world. I put my time in as a "Rocket Scientist" and took the blood pressure pills then. The biggest problem that I think I had with this was the pure waste of money, taking place. I finally put my time in, got out and was able to get off the blood pressure pills. All the experts say you can't do this, not so. I have the blood pressure of a healthy 30 yr. old. The little gray hair that I had all turned black again. The girl that cuts my hair asked me one day, what I was dying my hair with. These gun forums are just an interest that I have. Most slang terms don't bother me one bit. Some kinda just make you smile or something, that being said I don't like the term "shotty" or "shottie" or however you want to spell it. Sounds ghey to me. It does not keep me from reading a thread but I never refer to a shotgun as a shotty. Scattergun ok, shottie umm... ghey.

Some of my personal favorites are "naids" and "giggle switch". Course I love naids and boom sticks with giggle switches!

Some people take life way too serious....

If Shotty or Springer really makes you pop a vessel... I suggest an aspirin regimen, and high blood pressure pills are in your near future, if you aren't there already.

Watch a Spike Lee film and your head would probably explode...

+1

For me, it's less the words "shotty" or "springer" than the kind of lame wannabe gangsta-mall-ninja type people who use them. The words are just something that lets me know I'm talking to an idiot.

If I ever watched a Spike Lee movie I hope my head would explode and put me out of my misery. I hope it would explode big enough to take out that POS Spike Lee.

I plan to bring my Fabrique Nationale de Herstal Fusil Automatique Leger to the rifle range today. I shall bring several detachable box magazines filled to capacity with 7.62x51 NATO cartridges.

Capital idea, cjlandry! Shall I accompany you for a sniff of the old cordite, my good man?

I have just about reached the point to not read any post referring to a Springer or a shottie.
What is the point in this stupid "shorthand"?
I don't expect any logical answer so don't give it much thought.

I like how you used the word "don't" twice in your shorthand rant. I do not mind if you use it when typing a post. I am old and kind of new to this internet stuff, an I will not judge you if you type "shottie". If you use it in verbal conversation however you will look like an ass.

The people who enter this thread denigrating shorthand/ slang users as 'dumbasses', 'stupid' or the equivalent of knuckledragging trolls, as if name calling somehow elevates them as being above it all.

LOL... I don't know... I always looked at Shotty as kind of a term of endearment...

In truth... my POS Norinco 1887 Shotgun is just that, my spare shotgun.. with problems, not to be trusted, 1 step away from the trash can.
While my Mossberg 590, customized to my taste, is kind of special to me, and in posting, I'll use the term Shotty to describe it sometimes, smiling when I do.
I can see where someone would do that with Springer, or 9, or even 'brick', etc, etc

LoneRanger19 has it right though.... I'll never use it in conversation, and never have... hadn't thought about that till now... but I never have spoken the word Shotty to describe a shotgun to someone, hehe.. go figure.

I have a few shotties, some birdies, and some sluggers. With my pieces, the autos take clips, but the wheelies have more knockdown. The snubbie conceals easy and is a good peashooter.

Agreed, terms like shottie, springer, mossy, and terms like "It's on cuz", "lighten up, francis", and using "meh" instead of "me", has certainly been way over used here....

Maybe we should type up a compendium of firearm related slang terms and list it as a reference here on GT. Anyone who is not sure of the meaning of a term can look it up.

Yup. Reminds me of a class I went to last month taught by two LEOs and a former army medical officer. The cops' vocabulary was limited to "dude" and "mother-******er." The women in the class were "c*nts."

Reading American literature is more appealing than listening to grunting, foul-mouthed, tattooed, knuckle-draggers with a badge and a pistol.

To each his own. If people want to aspire to mediocrity, that's their choice.

Interesting note; the former well spoken military officer and a gentleman, has since left that training academy.

Cobra64:

Your gross stereotyping is appauling and obviously reflective of your I.Q. You're on the same level as the gun grabbers saying that everybody carrying a gun is either looking for trouble or causing it. Categorizing me as a knuckle dragging ape with a gun is a great way to get yourself written off as a fool.

calling people names because you didnt comprehend their post isn't a bad way to get written off as a fool either

ill simplify it for you:

Cobra64 was was trying to make the point that people who use vulger language as adjectives (words that describe things) to get their point across, often do it because they have no other way to express them selves. In no way did Cobra64 say that people who carry guns are "knuckle draggers" but that people who speak the way that the two previous LEO's are.

im not saying that LEO's are ignorant and stupid but i do agree with Cobra64 that people who speak like that and especially use those terms to describe a lady are definatly of a lower IQ and moral value

:dunno:

When there is a question of a person's grammar or vocabulary skills, there is always someone that writes a gem like this. It is unavoidable.

Is it really necessary to show that you might have a vocabulary (or might have a thesaurus) that is better than most?

Am I the only one that thinks posts like this are condescending and patronizing?

English was once referred to as the language of the common man. This is not a mensa meeting, it is a gun board.

Foul language is offensive. The fact of the matter is that brevity should not be looked down upon. I guess AustinTX should stop using all forms of abbrevations and contractions, since shortening anything is "neatherthal."

Oh, I'm sorry, I guess I did't realize you're better than the rest of us. I'll certainly remember that for the future.

All professions and hobbies have their shorthand expressions. Those are just some of the ones we use in the shooting hobby.

I suggest you learn not to let these things bother you.
