View Full Version : Mistake at the range with my wife
I took her to shoot the .38 snubbies for the first time yesterday. I carry the Colt DS and keep the M36 in the nightstand at home. It's become "her" gun.
Loaded with Speer Gold Dot's (got a great deal on them, thus used them for practice loads), the checkered, rosewood, boot grips tore the skin in two places inside her right thumb. (And she was using a tight, two-handed grip.)
Like a trooper, she dabbed the blood with a Kleenex, put on a pair of thin gloves and kept on torching 'em off.
She shot it fine for a first time shooter, but I felt bad that the grips bit her. I sold them last night and installed the Smith, factory rubber boot grips.
When we got home I ordered a couple of boxes of Buffalo Bore, low pressure, 158gr loads.
I'm also looking at the Hogue 61000's.
She shrugged it off and is ready to go back to the range, but I'll have a better grip for her hands next time.

Aww. I'm glad that she didn't get discouraged by that. She sounds like a great gal. :) And, I bet those hogues + lower pressure ammo will really improve the gun for her.

I have Hogue Bantams on both of my J-frames, one a model 60 in .357 Magnum and the other a 642 in .38 Spl +p, they make leaps and bounds worth of difference over the factory grips. Both are still a little to hold on to if you aren't ready for it but it is a little more enjoyable with better grips. Give them a shot, I am sure that you will agree. Glad she decided to tough through it and not give up. Not to many like that now a days, hang on to her!
FYI- one of the grammar nazis on here may fuss later on for you using the term "snubbie". I could care less but there is another thread where some of the older folks got some sand in the crotch and were complaining. Just giving you a heads up.
Thanks for the head's up.
Of course, one of the reasons I carry a snubbie is because they don't use clips.:tongueout:
And I went ahead and ordered a set of Hogue 61000's last night. We'll get her all fixed up and qualified to competently defend herself and her nest.
So there is a big difference between the factory rubber grips and the Hogues? I've thought about getting them for my 442 but didn't think that there was much difference between the factory rubber grips and the Hogues.

Find someone who sells Unlce Mikes grips from Michael's of Oregon, and put a set of these on it for her -

(sorry, I don't have a link right to UM's site as my PC at work does not have flash player on it and we are not allowed to install outside software)
These are NOT UM's "boot" style grips (UM makes a "boot" grip for J frames too) they are larger than those, but these DO work excellently! They are a little big for carry, but they are what I carried on my J frame when I carried one and they worked great and they are also what I had to put on my mother's Ti J frame so she could handle the recoil of the Ti with +P loads in it, and she shoots it fine with those on it (again, the larger, NON-"boot" grip style)
BTW, mom is 70. That tell you how well they work given their size for CCW?.............:)

I had those on my .357 when I first got it and took them off in favor of the Hogue's b/c like you stated, they were a little big for carry. If you aren't going to try and hide them under a t-shirt they are great but for concealment get the Bantams!

Putting the nicer grips on is a good start, but you might also buy some plain old Winchester or Remington 148 gr wadcutters. Those will be the softest shooting factory rounds (that I know of).

NO WAY!!!
Thats the best kind of girl around...one that doesn't act dainty and isn't afraid of guns.
House gun. Why no hammer? Why not a steel gun (with a 4 inch barrel) and big soft rubber grips? Why not Crimson Trace lasergrips?
House gun. You want it to stop an intruder. Go with 135 Gr. GDHPs. It's an awesome J-frame .38 round.
