View Full Version : Dad's New Toy
Well, my dad has decided that he wants a new handgun in .40 S&W. So, we went window shopping to look at some prices and models, and now he doesn't know what he wants. He's torn between the Springfield XDM, Springfield XD40, FNH FNP40, Beretta PX4, Walther P99, and the Beretta 96. Which one is the best value and most reliable? What's the going rate for them? Is $480 for the FNP40 with the FNH accessory kit (paddle holster, mag holster, training barrel) a good deal?

Consider that FN makes aprox. 90% of the military's small arms and the only reason they don't make the rest is that the gov't doesn't like change and that will give you an idea about the company. FN makes great gear that thousands of men and women trust their lives to. I've had FN products and they were top notch. I wouldn't think twice about it given the other choices you listed, get the FN.

Well, he was leaning towards the FNP40, anyhow. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some "secret" flaw ala second-gen G22's that we didn't know about. Also, we weren't too sure on the price. At $480, it was the cheapest one there by a good margin, and it came with the holster and everything that we would have had to buy with the P99 or the Berettas.
Tried to get him to handle the Steyr, but somebody beat us to it. It looked like he didn't want to let go of it even for the clerk/cashier/dealer to ring it up. Shame was, that was the only M40A1 I've seen around here in a loooong time.

How about a SIG 250.
He didn't like the P250. Said it was too short of a grip for his baseball mitt sized hands. And before y'all say anything, yes I showed him the 1911's. He wasn't interested.:dunno:
