I bet most of you remember the famous scene where Clint Eastwood, playing the role of San Francisco PD Inspector Harry Callahan interacted with a downed and wounded bad guy as follows:
"I know what you're thinking...did he fire six shots or only five. Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I've kinda lost track myself but being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question, do I feel lucky? Well, DO you, punk"?
As Callahan turns and starts to walk away, the bad guy calls after him, "HEY, I GOTS to know"! Harry obliges and aiming his S&W Model 29 six shot revolver at the bad guy's head, he COCKS the hammer back, pulls the trigger and there is a resounding "CLICK" as the hammer falls on an empty chamber.
The expressions on both their faces were PRICELESS! It just DOESN'T get better than this!!!

It's actually: "Hey, I GOTS to know!".
I have to agree that's one of the best movie scenes ever.
Josey Wales: "Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?"
Yeah, I love that scene.

It's actually: "Hey, I GOTS to know!".
I'll have to listen to the line over again!!! Assured that you're correct, I repaired my original post.
Thanks.

There was another Dirty Harry scene with the same line, only that time the punk felt lucky and wasn't.
Can't find a YouTube scene of it that hasn't been ruined by someone's idea of a joke.
I have to agree that's one of the best movie scenes ever.
Josey Wales: "Are you gonna pull those pistols or whistle Dixie?"
Josey Wales was full of awesome one liners. One of my favorites, when asked if he's gonna bury the guys he just killed:
"Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms" (then spits tobacco juice on dead guy's forehead).
If somebody was pointing a revolver at you, wouldn't you be able to look into the cylinder and see if there was a bullet waiting for you, especially on one as large as a 44 magnum.
I don't make a habbit of pointing guns at myself, but I would think it would be easy to tell.

Probably NOT!
Even IF you COULD take your eyes off the muzzle itself, the chamber containing the next round that's ready to fire would either be already lined up with the barrel, or, if not, still either positioned to the left or right of center, depending on rotation of the cylinder, and at least partially obscured by the revolver's frame.
It IS, after all, a matter of perspective!

When the media outlets are eulogizing Clint Eastwood, that scene from Dirty Harry is the one they're going to loop the most, along with the "make my day" scene.
Beautiful writing in both cases.

I agree here. LOL I also think one of the most intimidating and fearsome looking guns till this day is a Colt 1873 SAA or its clones. Just plain scary looking on the wrong end.
I also love the line, and the movie escapes me. They are robbing a place and Eastwood says
Eastwood - "Well, we're not just going to let you leave".
Bad guy- "We who sucker?"
Eastwood - "Well Smith and Wesson and ME."

From "The Enforcer":
Lt. Dobbs: Are you finished with the questioning, Callahan?
Harry Callahan: Hypothetical situation, huh? All right, I'm standing on the street corner, and Mrs. Grey there comes up and propositions me. She says if I come home with her, for $5 she'll put on an exhibition with a Shetland pony...
Mrs. Grey: If this is your idea of humor, Inspector...
Lt. Dobbs: All right, what are you trying to do here, Callahan?
Harry Callahan: I'm just trying to find out if anybody in this room knows what the hell law is being broken, besides cruelty to animals.

Ted Danson had a scene in one of his TV show where a guy was pointing a gun at him, and he noticed that. Something to the effect that he knew the guy wasn't going to shoot him, since there wasn't any pointy things in there.

Pesticidal,
I'm sure you're using sarcasm because you've posted here too often to put stock in that suggestion.
Fact: The greatest majority of those putting together TV shows (and, for that matter, movies made for the theater) don't know SMELLY STUFF FROM SHINOLA!
MOST of them REALLY should have had technical advisers before TRYING to accurately portray firearms and their proper uses, but OBVIOUSLY DID NOT!

Clint pulled the hammer back to fire the empty shell at him, after he said "i gots to know". Meaning, he advanced the round first, so it was not lined up to begin with. You would have been able to see. No frame obscuration. Actually, you can almost see down the cylinders in the YouTube clip.
I know what you mean though. I wouldn't want to be looking down the muzzle of a .44, and have to analyze if it is SA\DA, or if the hammer is already back, and if the round is chambered, etc. Too many variables. I would have just asked for my attorney. :crying:

No, seriously. I think it was a scene from Becker, A guy threatened to shoot him, it turned out to be a starter's pistol. I know it sounds weird. Maybe that's why it struck me as memorable.

Classic, but I still think my favorite is from The Outlaw Josey Wales:
"How is it with stains?"

LUVMYSIG225 is quite right. When Clint first walked up to the guy and started his speech, he cocked the hammer. Thus, round #6 was lined up and ready to go. Once he did not shoot him, he uncocked it....now that round was under the hammer. When the bad guy said, "hey, I gots to know", Clint pulled the trigger, with the hammer landing on the chamber AFTER the one that was loaded. So, he WAS holding the guy with a round ready to go. It was uncocking it and then pulling the trigger again that made the guy think Clint "got away" with something.

Josey Wales: Works on just about everything, eh?
Mr. Carpetbagger: It'll do most anything.

I enjoyed Josey Wales more. But the Dirty Harry movies are among my favorites.0

"Sudden Impact"
Great movie!

Any body else notice that this guy is in at least three of the Dirty Harry movies??
Dirty Harry - Bank Robber
The Enforcer - Mustofi (I think that's the name)
Sudden Impact - Horace, the cop that tries to sneak up on Harry while he's getting used to his .44 Magnum AutoMag and then tries to convince Harry to use a shotgun.

"Sudden Impact"
Great movie!
I was reading a review online and they were contending that Sudden Impact was widely acknowledged to be the worst of the Dirty Harry films. I liked it personally. Thought it was better than Dead Pool. My favorite of the Dirty Harry films is Magnum Force.

The .44 was empty. He fired all six. The .44 mag in the movie makes a different report than all the other firearms. Watch the clip again and listen.
Edit. Apologies. I always thought it was 5 too all these years and then I saw a recent clip and thought I must have been mistaken (for all those years). Well, someone must have added the 6th shot because one clip has the sound of 6 firing and in the other (i believe the original) you only hear 5.
6 shots : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-0BVT4cqGY
5 shots : Sorry, it's in Italian. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqT_hzBn2uA&feature=related
Not sure why new clips have the 6th shot. Maybe they added it in to stifle the debate?
