View Full Version : I want a shotgun!!! Help! SFLglock 06-30-2008, 08:07 ......... Zapfenstreich 06-30-2008, 11:07 I think i will be picking up a Mossberg 590 in the next couple of weeks if i can find a good deal but fist i wanted to ask a few questions. i want somthing like this http://www.mossberg.com/images/Mossberg_Guns/930/New/50665.jpg 2) how often do you clean and is it hard to field strip? 3) i never fired a shotgun before so how is the recoil? please post whatever else i need to know Sorry if i sound like a idiot :faint: Cleaning: After every range trip. Never let the sun set on a dirty gun. Some here will advocate cleaning less often. Recoil: With slugs or buck, a lot. Hold it tightly against your shoulder, lean forward. Use a pad to reduce bruising if you're sensitive. Some people love the recoil, some hate it. Most grow to tolerate or like it with enough experience. Whatever else: That's a good gun you chose. It's heavy but tough and reliable. Buy lots of "dove" loads at Walmart, and practice at close range to build your confidence. Move to long range later. Experiment with slugs. Don't buy any type of ammo in bulk without trying a box first, to see if you like it. Don't be in a rush to use 3" loads. Don't shoot too many rounds in any given range session - it'll tire you out and maybe give you a headache. Take along a .22 or pistol to give yourself a break, and see if you're developing a flinch (tendency to pull the muzzle down, against the expected recoil). Also, you're not an idiot for asking "n00b" questions. We were all new to this gun stuff once. Get ready to be attacked, no matter what opinion you hold. There's always someone who knows more than you, always someone who knows less, and usually about a dozen guys ready to pick a fight just because they want to. Don't let them force you into silence. MrMurphy 06-30-2008, 11:34 Pretty much what he said. Ammo cost, figure $5 per 5 round box for slugs or good buckshot. Birdshot for practice $6 or so per 25 round box. Shotguns do recoil hard. They are controllable and the average male, if trained properly will have no problem, but they're no .22. You KNOW you pulled the trigger. Rob Haught's method of shooting shotguns considerably reduces recoil and involves only holding the shotgun up against the shoulder (not in tight) and locking the forearm out. This lets your weak-side arm act as a shock absorber and not slam your shoulder so much. I've experimented with it and it does work pretty well. SFLglock 06-30-2008, 15:20 Thanks guys :wavey: Zombie Steve 06-30-2008, 17:46 Zapfenstreich is right on. You're going to love it. Disassembly is tough the first time, but you'll figure it out. I have a 500 and a 590a1. Love them both. http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x214/sbecht/DSCF1792.jpg sputnik767 06-30-2008, 17:55 I have a 500 with an 18.5" barrel. Recoil is very strong, but definitely manageable. I am 5'8" tall, weigh 130 lbs, and I have no problem shooting 00 Buck out of it. I bought a box of 3" slugs to try, but haven't had the chance yet. Bird shot has less recoil, but not that much. I have a female friend who I shoot with, and she wanted to try the shotgun. After some bird loads, she wanted to try 00 buck. She is smaller than me by the way, but she handled it just fine, although I had to stand behind her to catch her after every shot. Zombie Steve 06-30-2008, 18:54 I am 5'8" tall, weigh 130 lbs, and I have no problem shooting 00 Buck out of it. I bought a box of 3" slugs to try, but haven't had the chance yet. Have fun with those slugs. sputnik767 06-30-2008, 19:40 Have fun with those slugs. Ok, I'm excited now. Is the recoil that much stronger than a 2.75" 00 buckshot load? SFLglock 06-30-2008, 19:53 Sweet shotgun zombie steve! eddief4 06-30-2008, 20:54 Have fun with those slugs. Slugs are FUNNNN:supergrin: J1923 07-01-2008, 17:34 3" 12 gauge slugs shot from the shoulder can make your gums bleed if you are not careful, not to mention the giant black and blue marks on your shoulder the next day. Try shooting from the hip with the gun pressed against your side and elbow. The gun will rock straight back and forth (though some insist the barrel will pop up an hit you in the mouth, they're wrong), but watch for the Mossberg safety on top, it'll scratch the hell out of your shooting hand this way. G31Steve 07-01-2008, 18:58 Ok, I'm excited now. Is the recoil that much stronger than a 2.75" 00 buckshot load? Yes it is... I am 6'4" 280lbs and I wont shoot 3' shells unless I have to. Good choice I have the same gun is a great gun. like others have said recoil can vary depending on the load. I was the first shotgun I ever owned and reassembly was a tad tricky but after the the 2nd or 3rd time I got used to it.Switched out the plastic on mine fo some nice wood... http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh65/g17steve/Mossy590.jpg tech4061 07-01-2008, 19:56 3) i never fired a shotgun before so how is the recoil? I put a Limbsaver recoil pad on my moss 500. Mine is a slip-on, but I have arms like a monkey, so the extra length doesn't bother me. It makes recoil much more tolerable. Of course, they also make custom pads in case you need to cut down your stock to compensate for the extra LOP the pad will add. Great shotgun by the way. tc2129 07-01-2008, 20:52 What everyone else said. Hold the gun tight in your shoulder and lean forward. It's really cool to see the power of a shotgun round. So fun to shoot. Well until your shoulder starts to get sore and you get the bruise. vBulletin® v3.7.3, Copyright ©2000-2008, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. | ![]() |
