If I am posting this in the wrong forum, I apologize!
I recently purchased a Mossberg 500 for hunting on the WMA in my state (because most are limited to shotgun only!) I am new to the shotgun world and was wondering what is the best type of slug to shoot out of a smooth bore gun. Also, what type of choke should I use or avoid? Most of my hunting will be for wild boar no further than 50 yards.
Thanks in advance for your advise, I really appreciate it!

No choke, or improved cylinder (what the gun probably came with).
Remington Sluggers will work fine. If you have rifle or ghost ring sights, you can easily make 75+ yard hits. With ghost rings and Remington Sluggers from my Benelli Nova SP, I would routinely headshot silhouettes at 100 yards from the prone position (made a nice pile of $ from people betting a shotgun couldn't hit that far too).
Brenneke is also a good brand. On the sabot-vs-rifled-vs-Foster, I don't know much so I won't offer advice, the basic Slugger (Foster type) is all i ever used.
Foster or Brenneke type slugs, no sabots. They are generally referred to as 'rifled slugs'. Winchester, Remington, Federal, Wolf, and Sellier & Bellot all offer these types of slugs, and there may be others.
I lover the KEnt brenneke load called the KO works great threw my smooth bore 1100 special purpose after that base model winchesters my dads 1100 likes remmington slugger you need to just test a bunch and see
I have taken over 50 deer with Remington sluggers. Open chokes like improved cylinder are more accurate because full choke is too tight for the slug to pass through so it has to compress just to get through. Makes it way less accurate.
Sabot rounds need rifled barrels to spin them and stabilize the round.
Rifled slugs in regular shotgun barrels do not spin, but are built like a badminton birdie (shuttlecock) with the weight forward to make them fly better.
They are a .729 caliber slug weighing approximately 437 grains.
Makes a nice 73 caliber hole completely thru most deer. Never hunted hogs with one, but I bet a broadside shoulder hit would knock them flat like it does 200lb deer.
Test your barrel with Remington, Federal, Winchester and Brenneke slugs to see which one your barrel shoots the most accurately.
Be advised that 12 ga slugs kick the same measured recoil as Elephant guns.

I used to shoot the Remington slugs out of my 870 smooth bore. Had decent accuracy. Maybe 4" @ 50 yds. I tried the Federal Truball Reduced Recoil slugs 2 3/4" & the groups dropped to 2" @ 50 yds. Alot less recoil as well, but plenty of power to handle whitetails.
I use Brenneke KO slugs in my 870 (rifle sighted)
Groups five into 1.5-3" at 50yrds and would be excellent for piggies.
Penetration to bejezus.
