View Full Version : Any Stainless Steel Pistol Problems?
I have been changing my mind a lot about my next pistol purchase. On my short list is the Sig-Sauer P229 Elite stainless.
I've heard a few grumblings here and there about stainless slides "sticking" on stainless frames and wonder how true these statements are.
I'd appreciate ANY comments regarding stainless pistols, especially: are they worth the extra money?
Thanks

I don't see why it should vs a blued slide. I don't own a Sig but I have a few 1911s some blued, some stainless.
The only thing I don't like about stainless is keeping them clean

I have Sig P229 stainless Elite. I fired about 150 or so round thought it without a problem. One thinkg about stainless guns is that they are heavy. Wood grips on those are not too practical either, unless u have larger hands.
I recently took a liking of stainless guns and actually sold a couple of plastic ones to finance my purchases. The only problem I had with stainless guns was with PPK having slight rust problems on the ourside of the slide (bunch of little dots) that probalby came from morning condensation in the car.

No problems with any of mine, Sig or otherwise.
Stainless guns don't show holster wear too much. Biggest advantage I see.
I had a S&W mdl 5906 in stainless that started 'galling' itself to shreds after not too many rounds.
It was not for the lack of lube, either.
Some have said that the frame and the slide were the same hardness and that was the cause of the pistol shedding metal filings.
That pistol left real quick.

I love my Sig P229 Elite in Stainless. Like the previous poster said, it's a heavy gun and while the wood grips are beautiful, they are a bit big for most.
Shoots amazingly well, easy to clean, and built like a tank. You will also like the SRT (short reset trigger) trigger that comes on the Elite.

my para p15 is complete stainless. i put 2 fine hair line scratch on the front of it from being careless. the grip safety is no longer stainless but rather changed color even though i keep them in tip-top condition.
my sig 226 on the other hand is spotless. of all the guns i own, i think glock finish is the best. all other guns seem to scratch way too easy, especially the stainless stuffs that have some satin coating on it such as taurus. the finish underneath is stainless so i see no need to apply a satin finish that scratch easily even with fingernail.

PillBoxDon't buy a Sig. They are way over priced, constant jamming issues, and incredibly inaccurate. Ergonomically, they feel like a brick, and as heavy as a boat anchor.
Stick with Glocks and Kel-Tecs.

And we were very careful about all stainless pistols.... Galling was a big deal back then... Pretty sure this was 25 to 30 years ago however.
If it was made in the 90's it's probably fine, after 2000 no doubt it is fine. Metallurgy has come a long, long way.
Older pistols could be an issue, so just be aware when picking up some of the older pistols...

Thanks. I think this is most likely correct. It eases my mind about this purchase very much. Thanks.

Hey, Cobra...it was YOU and THIS set of photographs that got me all hot and bothered about "having" to go stainless Sig for my next purchase, so don't start up the Glock/KelTec/Hi-Point dodge.
Oh, by the way, you wouldn't mind letting me borrow a couple of your pieces for just a wee tiny bit so I could, y'know, see if they be OK and shtufff, would you?

Your very dear friend,
PillBoxGlad I could be of help Pillbox. These stainless things do have an allure for some folks.
Think about how many threads about finishes disolving, wearing off, needing repainting and all the other high maintenance monkey-business. It's a non-issue in native stainless.
As for lending out my Sigs; sure, why not? I took a three day Grayguns training class a year ago and a girl's M&P broke on the first day. I had a spare Sig and she shot the remaining two days (about 1,200 rounds) with it. She bought a Sig a few weeks later.
Here's some 229ST eye candy:

I started in 1982 carrying a Ruger Police Service Six in stainless steel. For 17 years that was my only carry piece, and I carried it every day. I never had any problems with it. I still have it, and still occasionlly carry it when the circumstances dictate it. I have a Glock 17 as my main carry piece right now, because its easier for me to conceal. I sometimes carry a Ruger P91DC in stainless, and haven't had any problems with that one either.
