yup, areas in California as of 7/1/08 will no longer allow lead projectiles while hunting. this means no more pop'n ground squirrels with that sweet shoot'n 22 you've always held near and dear to your heart, this means no more hunting of ANY KIND with lead projectiles within the given areas. i live in the area, i have yet to see a damn condor EVER and this law's supposed to keep em from get'n lead poisoning. the **** they come up with. seems to me that someone made a "balistisafe" brand of 22 ammo for use in underground 22 shooting ranges like the one in your ROTC bunker at a high school but i haven't heard of it in years does anyone make non lead 22lr anymore?

EITHER WAY, i've got a whole bunch of useless ammo now.:faint::ack:

That sucks, but maybe, now that the condors aren't dying from all that lead poisoning, you'll see more of them, now. ;)

This is the kind of garbage you get when you vote old hippies into public office...

Don't vultures have the same diet and live in the same areas as the Condor? Why are they thriving? Is it because they are just smarter than the Condor? Does the Condor need to be protected from itself at all costs? Why not just capture some and build a bad-***** aviary for them, so that everyone will be allowed to hunt with something other than all-copper bullets and old Soviet steel-core stuff?

You should shot a few of em with steel shot, and say "what, its not lead poisoning..."

See how liberals get gun owners to comply with an anti-gun agenda, they implement it piece by piece.

First no lead, then no bullets, then no guns.

Disregard the hippies, shoot lead. :steamed:

nah, found out if im shooting paper and cans and NOTHING DIES in the precess then i can still shoot the ammo, just keep it around for cousins ans nephews i guess, even if i had more than a couple of bricks of 22 ammo it's not enough to sell and ship. the rest of it, all the other shelves of boxes of 243,etc, etc, etc, etc, will just have to be used in another state... which pleases me. was looking for another excuse to go back to Texas for a hunt. the majority of the stockpiles of ammo aren't for hunting anyway when i think about it, they're for ZOMBIES.

NG VI commented that the vultures are thriving. Of course they are, they are feeding off the public trough in the state house. Oh, you mean the avian vultures, sorry.

Everytime I think I've heard it all from CA, they prove me wrong. What's next? Don

You're grossly misinformed.

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/hunting/condor/docs/LeadInformation.pdf

Read the fine print folks before you jump on a bandwagon, do a little research and get your self informed. (this concept transfers to other areas of discussion as well)

As an outdoorsman, I offer that we are all stewards of the environment. No lead shot for migratory waterfowl turned out to be a good idea.......

uhm...where was i wrong? i don't understand your point. the first paragraph summarizes everything i said, the rest of it goes into detail, and actually, that's where i GOT my info in the first place. to be entirely critical, half of the paper contradicts itself, but the law of ethics would imply that the strictest of the contradictions is actually being utilized. so...back to paragraph one.

Good link although I wouldn't consider the OP grossly misinformed, just unaware of a few important details.

"What are the regulations and options for hunting with .22 caliber or smaller rimfire
firearms?

Rimfire firearms are not legal in California for hunting big game or for depredation killing of big game animals (these are primarily deer and wild pig in condor range). Rimfire firearms are legal for nongame animals (coyotes and ground squirrels primarily) and for sport hunting of small game mammals [hares (jackrabbits), cottontail, and tree squirrel]. However, for nongame animals the Commission has prohibited use of lead projectiles in .22 rimfire or smaller firearms as part of this regulation change in condor range.

The Commission has not addressed the issue of hunting small game mammals because
that section of the regulations was not “opened” for potential change. Therefore, hunters can legally hunt jackrabbit, cottontail, and tree squirrel using lead projectiles, but not ground squirrels in the same area. Part of the reasoning for this is that unlike nongame animals that are hunted and usually left in the field, game species must be retrieved and not wasted.

The Department and Commission are of the understanding that non-lead projectiles for
rimfire are not readily available or manufactured at this time and that the only non-lead rimfire is in .22 caliber magnum, and not for the very popular .22 short, long, or long rifle."

Not explicitly discussed in this thread, but an important exception:

"What about target shooting, “plinking”, or firearms for personal protection?

The Commission does not regulate these activities. Use of lead projectiles is legal
unless another government entity has determined otherwise for lands they administer.
The regulations prohibiting lead only relate to possession while engaged in specified
hunting activities."

One really great thing about America is that if their is a need and money to be made someone will start loading non lead bullets in the 22 long rifle. They may turn out to be even better than the bullets we are using right now.
