Happy 4th of July to everyone from Sunny Florida, too!

I will be finishing up painting our bedroom tomorrow. Just a tiny bit of trim work left to do.

Not much time to enjoy the fireworks. We are packing stuff up, and leaving Sunday for Ohio. We are Camp Perry bound. We are going to shootin the Army Marksmanship Unit's Small Arms Firing School, then do the M9 EIC match (excellence in competition).

This year though, we get to see the first shot ceremonies, listen to the Army brass band, and hear a speech by Ohio's Governor.

I hope you guys all have a great 4th!

<---Is working on putting everything back together in the room I've been painting! :dancingbanana: THAT is my favorite part of painting!!!

Not only is hubby working....he already called to say he has to work LATE!!!!

Now, I'm glad I didn't invite anyone over!

I'll just have a nice dinner planned when he gets home.

We have an invitation to go somewhere tonight, but I'm guessing he'll be too tired....he works tomorrow, too! :sadangel:

Ended up with nothing yesterday. It was like our area was in a bubble. Districts all around us were going crazy. We didn't have nothing, nada, zip. I'm conflicted when it gets boring. I like that nothing bad is happening to anybody, and yet I wish it wasen't so boring.:rofl:

Did not buy fireworks. All the stuff you can get in MI, sucks. I do know someone however, that will be in Ohio in a couple days. I also happen to know you can buy all the fun stuff you want there.

There are fireworks displays all over the greater Orlando area tonight.

We MAY watch them on TV...Hubby has to work tomorrow so he definitely is NOT in the mood for crowds. (He's not even into crowds on a GREAT day!)

Too many mosquitos to go sit outside to watch anyway!

I remember the days when he and my b-i-ls and uncles bought SO many fireworks that the children fell aSLEEP before the "dad's" finished the show!

The good ol' days...yeah the were! :hearts:

Edited to add: I can actually see some fireworks looking right out my living room window!

You really want to imply you are the only country to ever lose to France?

We were winning without the help of France. Don't fall for distorted history that tries to undermine the greatness of this country. That is not a proud statement, it is not the people that make us great, but rather ideals and faith. A belief in God and willingness to govern ourselves according to the dictates of our own conscience.

Towards the end the French rightly became excited by the progress we were making and wanted to be on the winning side. The help of the brave Frenchmen who loved freedom is remembered gratefully and respectfully. Their sacrifice was not in vain and the blood they invested bought freedom for their own country.

Far more American blood has since been spilled keeping both Britain and France, not to mention a great portion of the rest of the world, free from tyranny and repression of horrific proportions. We do this because the hope true freedom still burns within out hearts and fires our determination that with each passing generation we make the world a better place for all mankind.

Mr. HE:cool:

I suggest that France's involvement in the revolution was less enthusiasm for liberty, recall that at the time, France was a repressive monarchy, and more pragmatic.

France was still smarting after having lost New World territory in the French and Indian Wars and anything they could to do decrease British influence was a win for France.

The monarchy was hardly going to promote colonial rebellion as a good thing.

I also suggest, and have no real evidence, that France anticipated that once Britian was flushed from the New World, France would supplant the British as the new colonial masters and reap the resources.

Spain, their only other rival, was already gettiing out of colonial expansion and was looking to dump their holdings in the New World.

Had the French Revolution not occurred and then Napoleon's rise to power a decade later, we woudl probably be ... Quebec. :scared:

NB: Cheers, Giggly. :hearts: We're over that rough patch in the 18th century and don't hold a grudge.

Tks Tous.

We were doing pretty well in both World Wars defending our little island from the oppression that was headed our way. The French are a different people altogether. That and they don't have a thing called the English Channel.

Oh and HE I seem to remember that the US was late in showing up to the party on BOTH occasions....:tongueout:

That and a lot of British blood has been spilt standing side-by-side US servicemen and women, people who we are proud to call friends and proud to serve with!

Here endith the discussion.

tous, you are right about the motivations of the ruling monarchy in France at the time. I have not studied their motivation as much. Mostly I'm recalling what was written by some of the Frenchmen who actually did the fighting. Many of the them were very impressed with the idea of freedom and made no secret of it. Some of them came to assist the colonies of their own initiative, arguing that it was a just and noble cause.

In a world policy context there was a lot at stake and neither France or England really liked the idea of a colony bidding them adieu or goodbye.

Most people do not understand that the Revolution was not a Revolution. It was in fact a very legal war. Parliament had exceeded its authority by trying to pass religious laws and taxes on the colonies. The colonies appealed to the king for protection since the crown had given the colonies their charters and authority to exist. The king decided to declare war on the colonies and subject them to Parliament. For a multitude of reasons he did not have the legal authority to do this, despite being the king.

Basically the Revolution was a defensive action against an invading army.

Of course, all the details take volumes and volumes and is much more complicated. I would add that leading English jurists agreed with the position of the colonies, but were afraid to say so publicly for fear of being executed for treason. They did however write about it and in later years even published what they wrote at the time.

We'll never know for sure, but's it always interesting to speculate.

My only thought, if indeed the Crown had declared war on the colonies how could the British then accuse the colonists of treason? They weren't errant subjects, they were enemy combatants, no? :headscratch:

It cannot be overstated how important to their own revolution it was that French soldiers returned home after the American Revolution filled with stories of valiant peasants with pitchforks casting off a smotheringly oppressive monarchy.
