View Full Version : Just made an impulse buy... my first beretta
Haha, okay, so I'm scanning for a good double stack 9mm. The thing is, I have a glock23 and like it, but the grip angle and the way that it does not naturally point really kind of bugs me. I'm keeping it for use at the academy, but I shoot A LOT better with my 3" 1911 and any other gun of similar frame. I held a 92fs the other day and noticed how well it pointed... And with current 9mm ballistics in hollowpoints, I would not feel undergunned with 15+1 round of 9mm winchester rangers. So, I put a Police special 92fs on layaway. I paid too much for it (about 500), but hey, I like supporting the gun shops, so I'll take the hit. I've always wanted one as this is the "cop" gun I always saw in the movies growing up.
My whole thing on reliability for these:
An officer I worked with told me that he liked the berettas. The only reason why some officers had problems with them that he remembered was that they only lubed cleaned them barely 3 times a year. I've heard that in many places, so I'm not worried b/c I even strip and clean my glock and my other guns every few weeks to keep them properly cleaned and lubed. I hope I like my new acquisition...

Beretta brand mags. Stick with the manufacturer OEM models.
They don't need to be excessively lubed (i didn't overdo it on my M9 in the desert), just normal lubing. Slide rails, around the barrel, etc.

I think people have gotten caught up in the "plastic frames rule" craze, but the 92 series Beretta will probably always be a favorite of mine. They are accurate, reliable, have very light recoil, have very good DA trigger pulls, and are much more durable than people give them credit for. My only complaint is their overall bulk, but I'm willing to put up with it because of everything else it has going for it.
Keep it relatively clean and properly lubed, feed it from factory mags, and it will serve you well for a long time. The only changes I make to mine are buying a metal guide rod and trigger, and even those are probably more for peace of mind than for a practical reason.
It should serve you reliabily for years to come. They are a well thought out design and tested by our military. I carried one in the military for years and functioned through alot of dirt, sand, etc.

I bought my wife a Tomcat with Big Dot sights because she said her arthritis made it impossible for her to rack a slide. She shot my Italian 92FS that I've had for 20+ years and guess what, her arthritis cured up. She took it away without even asking.
It's in, I've yet to pick it up. :) I'm hoping to put some rounds downrange and get a good owb carry holster for it. :D
I'm also looking at a makarov... I was into rifles, but handguns are becoming my weakness. :D
What caused some of the bad reports I've heard from returning soldiers. One guy from Afghanistan talked about bad magazines - doesn't the Army use factory mags. This guy said he couldn't get through 50 rounds without a malfunction.

No, the Army doesn't use factory Beretta mags. It's all about the lowest bidder, and that has proven to be a mistake in this case.
Yep, the army quit supplying mecgar and beretta factory mags during the war... now troops are supplying their own and I think the military is starting to supply the good stuff.
I've got a 92f that shoots very well. I like the design.
If you want a higher capacity mag, the mec-gar 18 and 20 round mags are VERY reliable.

$500 for a 92fs is a decent price around here as I've seen them typically go for $550. but I guess since you're getting a LE discount that may be a lot. out of curiosity how much are LE0's and NON-LEO's paying for their M9's or 92fs's ?

I love mine and am sure you will love yours. I like mine so much I own 3 4 if you count the dedicated conversion kit on a 92 frame. To me they are the best. Very reliable, accurate, comfortable, and they look great. Anybody that says otherwise has probablly never shot or even held one

They have other magazines for the Beretta pistols.
Check it out.
Wally,
What every good thing said above plus it fun to accessorize!
Other accessories that I have added to my Beretta 92 FS (early Italian Stainless Steel) are:
1) Beretta 22 LR conversion kit
2) Beretta 96 slide upper 40 S&W conversion kit (blue with night sights - looks good two tone!)
3) KelTec 2000 Sub with Beretta lower grip
4) Boyt bag to carry everything together with the KelTec Carbine folded and velcro strap down

+1
cant state it any better than that!
The 92fs is a GREAT gun. It was the first one I bought about 10 years ago...and it NEVER let me down. I have been on the range with guys shooting $1,200 Kimbers (not saying Kimbers are good or bad). They had issues, while my Beretta was spot on. Enjoy!
