I just bought the set online, including shorter bushings and screws. Anyone have experience installing these? Is it something that should not be attempted with basic tools, i.e. without a bushing wrench?
Thanks

The big problem that I've had is that bushings are not made of very good metal. You can strip the screwdriver slot out of a bushing very, very easily. The first time I tried, I got 2 out with no problems, was able to get #3 with a vice-grips but ended up having to drill out the fourth, which was pretty easy (that's my guess as to why the bushings are made of soft metal--I'd rather have to drill those out that damage the frame, of course).
That said, the job itself is a 10-second job as long as you don't have any problems. A grip-bushing-screwdriver bit is only $10 (I assume that's what you meant by "bushing wrench") and I plan to pick one up sometime in the future.
And you want to locktight the new bushings in, with blue.

The trick to removing the old is to fill the slot completely. A good tight fit with the tool.
Short of the bushing wrench the best is a NON tapered gunsmith screwdriver or bit that will fill the slot and be careful it doesn't slip out. Did one last week with no problems using gunsmith bit.

I would just order a wrench because at some point you will probably want to switch back.
