There is absolutely no CA laws that prevents you from using the same quality SD handgun ammunition that is issued to law enforcement.

i shot 50 rounds of the 147 grain federal HST in my new glock 19 today. accuracy was outstanding. the 147 gr shoots 1/2" above point-of-aim at 25 feet, consistently. the 115 grain ball ammo i was shooting was about an inch lower at the same distance. i'm guessing glock must have dialed-in the g19 on the 124 grain stuff..
the 147 grain HST is flat out awesome. lower recoil than the 115 grain blazer brass plinking ammo, the noise was also definitely lower, with a lot less muzzle flip. i felt in complete control of the pistol at all times, even in rapid fire

I carry the same ammo that is issued to LEO all the time. If it is good enough for LEO, it is good enough for me.
HST is great stuff, I have some 147 +P and some 165 and some 180 on the way, so I can retire these Golden Sabers from my 27. Not that GS is bad, I just only have one box of it and to me, not firing a few rounds of carry ammo is AWFUL.

Any civilian is allowed to own LEO boxed ammo, as long as it's not one of the "forbidden types," such as true armor piercing handgun ammo, etc.
Thus, you can own as much Federal HST, Winchester Ranger, Remington +P+ 115 grain JHP, Speer Gold Dot, etc., as you want, even if the box says "for law enforcement use only."

Labeling it LE ammo is a marketing thing. While the ammo is good, the labeling is what draws the customers to buy thir particular brand. Find out what workd bet in your handgun, i.e. accuracy and reliability, and stick with that. As long as you're comfortable with it and have faith it will do its job, you will do well. My personal favorites are Speer Gold Dot +P and Hornady TAP, both in 124 gr for my G17.

absolutely legal. still, i wouldn't have the labeled box around with me for leo to see it. you never know what one might think. i had an leo give me minor grief over some black talons.

I don't know if I'd go as far as hiding the box, but you are right about some LEOs being ignorant about the legality.

The main issue that keeps me from carrying HST in my guns is that it just doesn't have enough street credability for me to feel comfortable with.
Sure, it looks pretty in testing, but bullets can do strange things in the real world and I feel that the design change is significant enough that it needs street data first.
thanks alot guys, i think i will be picking up some HST's pretty soon. I just bought 500 rounds of WWB at wal mart for $18.42 a pop (100rd box).
