View Full Version : General increase in revolver interest?
Has anyone noticed an increase in revolver interest, especially Smith and Wesson? I admit that I've only gotten more interested in the last year and a half or so, but it seems others are also becoming more interested.
I started off in LE with a M64 revolver in the eighties and purchased it when we switched to semi-autos. I mostly got it for sentimental reasons and to hand down to kids/grandkids if they want it. But lately, I seem to be reading more about the old-time cops like Jelly Bryce, Bill Jordan and others. Maybe I'm just getting old and soft in the head, but carrying a K or J frame revolver feels good again.
I still carry my Glock 23 much of the time, but for camping and quick, short trips I have been going to the revolver more and more. Part of my brain says that I should know that the most dangerous time is likely the short, close to home trip, but the other part says I could solve most problems with a few rounds from a good revolver.
Part of me also says that the guns least likely or last to be restricted with new legislation would be most revolvers. I'm not sure if that does or should mean anything to me right now.
Well, that's enough rambling for now, but has anyone else noticed a renewed interest or experienced it themselves?
Yeah, I have too. They still shine in the bug role, and have always had the power advantage for critter protection.

I think you guys nailed it with the two roles the revolver still holds onto. I prefer autos for general defense, but I'd rather have a small revolver in my pocket or a .44 on my side in the woods.
My interest sure has increased! Bought three new S&Ws in the past month - Model 36, 60, and 610. I didn't really need them - just wanted them. I suddenly realized that I didn't have any serious wheelguns in my collection and had to fill the void.

I'm an "auto guy" (always have been) but my first pistol was a Security-Six, and I've also had a 649 and a 581.
I regret selling all of them.
A 642, and possibly a Super Blackhawk are in my future.

I'm a auto guy also, I only regret selling one revolver... a 640-1 no lock.

Here too! 3 wheel guns in 2 weeks! All Smiths, too! First, Model 15 2"; second, Model 10 2"; third Model 686 6" unfluted cylinder with Patridge front sight. 15 shoots awesome, 10 is pretty good, 686 will know this weekend!

After the Great Clip/Mag debates....
Many like the revo.
Once they try one.
Lucky I was started on them.

Revolvers are my "fun" guns, autoloaders are my "serious" guns.
Nothing more fun than an afternoon at the range with my 629. :)
Well, Ive been shooting about for about 34 years now, and i started out with my dad, shooting a Smith revolver in 38/357. There is just something about a good revolver. I believe younger shooters who never started on revolvers eventually try them and wonder what they have been missing. I love my Glocks, 1911s and such, but revolvers will always have a place in my heart. Also, there is something to be said for an ultra reliable, tough, accurate and light revolver in the pocket or belt holster when things go bad.

I go back to the early '70s when we trained hard with the .357mag (M28, M19 & M66) and our speedloader times were pretty fast. I'm not convinced that the chageover to semi-autos has benefited the modern day LEO.
The M686+ is an excellent combat magnum, especially engaging multiple targets with speed and accuracy. The M327 TRR8 I just bought, nice balance with its scandium frame/stainless cylinder and 5" barrel. It's also drilled and tapped for mounting lights and red dot holographic sights.
If it was my call to equip a department's sidearm carry; the .357mag would get some serious consideration. :)

Dogbite hit the nail on the head.
Well, it looks like I'm not alone! I'm glad to see that others share my renewed interest in these fine guns.

Wow, you must be "old" lol:supergrin::wavey:
I brought home 7 Smiths in the last three weeks or so. I bought a few outright and swaped for a few. I have all types of guns but I am getting to a point that it is a pain in the arse to pick up brass. I reload all of the calibers that I shoot so I go through a bunch of ammo each time I go to the range. Dumping ammo out of a revolver into my bag sure is easier than shagging brass out of the tall grass. Anyway the Smiths are a nice addition to my arsenal.
I agree with you on picking up brass in tall grass. and since I am disabled and have to sit in a wheelchair half the time,I am switching my glocks to all revolvers. Not actually the new smiths with locks on them, but,,,,,,,,, if I can find a 2 and 4 inch barrel 4 inch model 64 heavybarrel revolvers,I have it made. 17z,Omaha,Ne.

The beauty of a gun like a Glock lies in it's functionality. OTOH, you can look at a well-made revolver and really appreciate the craftsmanship. Especially on somwthing like an old Blued Smitty or Colt. And those guns just shoot so nice......

My revolvers will be with me when all the bottom feeders have long been gone! I love revolvers.
5 shot bulldog or 6 shot revolver doesn't give you 18 shots a glock does so your mind set changes there's no wasteful shooting or when you go to the range you see pray and spray. What a waste of expensive ammo at least in my book. I enjoy shooting my revolvers as they are dependle and fun to shoot and I 've had them longer then any
auto I 've owned.

I'm a young buck so I started out with autoloaders, but I soon fell in love with revolvers. I generally carry an autoloader still, but when I want something smaller I go with a j-frame or sometimes I carry a 3 or 4 inch 6 shooter.

I agree!

Preach on Brother!
I started out as an auto-guy, but over the years I have developed a slight preference for revolvers. More comfortable to shoot and reliability can't be beat.
I have never owned a revolver other than a Smith. I have about 15 of them, from .41 mags to .38 Specials. I love each and every one of them.
Of course, I also love auto-loaders (8 or so 1911's).
I love all types of fine firearms.

But, you can't spray and pray with a 686! You have to actually make every shot count with a revolver, and PD's aren't into that anymore.
I was in LE in the early 90's when they decided our .357 Smiths were no longer effective against those big bad gang members with Uzi's. We had to have semi-autos to even have a chance of surviving the next shift. (Sorry for the sarcasm but I saw a lot of crap while in LE and the mass move to semi-autos was part of it.)

While I have both autos and revolvers, and usually end up carrying an auto "mousegun," I'm really a revolver fan. I shoot them better than I shoot autos, and I've never had feeding issues with them, which I can't say for some of my autos, despite my best efforts to keep them clean and lubed and well cared for.
Last month, over one weekend, I found two revolvers I couldn't pass up. One was a 3-inch (not 2 3/4") stainless Speed-Six in .38 special with a bobbed hammer. The other was a near perfect blued 2" S & W Mod. 15 .38. I also have a 2 3/4" Security Six, and 3" S & W 36 Ladysmith, with the heavy barrel. All I need is a 2" J-frame, and I'll have a carry revolver for any occasion.
Semi-auto guns, both long and short, are demonized by the anti-gun movement here in the US, and are likely to bear the brunt of anti-gun legislation in the upcoming decade. Revolvers, for seem reason, appear less threatening though I suspect that will only be temporary. So there is likely to be an upturn in interest in the wheelgun for the next couple of years or so.
Unfortunately, for those of us here in the US, I fear the next administration is going to mark the end of the sale of semi-auto handguns to civilians, at the very least. I think it would be a good idea, if one feels the need to have a handgun for defense, to put your money into wheelguns rather than autos, and get at least one small frame, and one medium frame revolver in the next couple of months.
Just had a barrel and slide replaced on my carry autoloader. Now I need to break it in with 200 rounds, and then shoot another 100 rounds of my carry load to prove it out.
With the J-frame, it was shoot 4 rounds of the carry load to make sure the bullets weren't backing out, and the rest was just getting acquainted.
I sure wish revolvers were thinner!

I started with a revolver and didn't use an autoloader for years. I now find I shoot an autoloader just like a revolver. Not a bad thing.
