View Full Version : new shotgun break-in question
here is a question for all Tactical Shotgun Club Members:
How many shells would you put through a brand new shotgun in order to gain confidence?
I ask because I am going to bring my new 590A1 out to shoot for the first time sometime this week, and I am debating on how many of my shells I want to shoot. Is 50 a good number? I think shotguns are supposed to be an either they work or they don't type of gun, however my 870 had no problems the first time I brought it out (50 or more shells), and then it had problems that showed up later on.

Any new machine (which a gun is) needs a little break in.
If you don't have any problems in the first 150 rounds or so I think you'll be fine. Just try not to shoot all of them at once.
eh, I guess the more you fire the more confident you are. It is gonna suck coughin up the change to pay for replacement ammo, but whatever. At least it is fun shootin stuff at the range.

Birdshot is like $5 for 25 rounds.......
Fairly inexpensive.
Good point, I didn't think of the birdshot boxes. I was thinking more of the harder recoiling buckshot for function testing, but I suppose any shells should be able to test the action.

Shells are shells, they will load/extract/eject and/or fire regardless of what is going out the barrel.
If you can crank off 150 birdshot without any "gun related" problems, toss in a couple boxes of buck and maybe a box of slugs, and they all go bang, you should be fine.
Well, I shot I think 145 shells today! 75 bird shot shells, 5 slugs, and the rest some 00 buck from my ammo stash. All fired without a problem, and the action was smooth and functioned like it was supposed to. My shoulder got real sore of course, so I had to shoot a bit from my left shoulder, which was odd. I have never shot using the "wrong" shoulder before, but it was interesting to try.
I love my new Mossberg :supergrin: Not sure why I didn't just grab another box of shells to reach that magic number of 150, but whatever. I feel that my new shotgun proved itself

Good enough. I picked 150 because it's a nice round number and birdshot comes in boxes of 25.
I DID tell you "don't shoot it all at once" for a reason... you're gonna be SORE tomorrow!
Haha yes I am definitely sore.
I think it was worth it, it was super fun, and now I know that my new shotgun works fine. It is a good hurt
The Goverment did 3000 and ruled the 590 fit for service. One box of 25 fast, slow and upside down. Clean barrel real good first with good solvent like Hopps. Make sure you get the chamber real good. Lightly oil the rails and bearing services the bolt ride in. Should be get to go. The 590 mossy is real tuff and over in the sandbox has proven reliable in the sand and dust. More so than the M16-m4 rifles.

I think that this question should read:
"How many rounds of a specific shell should be fired in order to gain confidence?"
Shells are not shells in regards to loading/EXTRACTING/ ejecting..
Just pick up and compare any of your regular hunting/clay shooting rounds. Look at the differences in the rim.
My own 590A1 can have issues with certain cheap/bulk ammo.
