I want to run 000 buckshot in my 870......the question is.....I want to run it with a FULL choke....Is that a good combo and why or why not.

To me..the big buckshot with a tight pattern is an awsome combo! What am I missing?

Thanks,

I'm not a shotgun expert, but I would say full choke is way too tight.I would go with improved cylinder or even cylinder bore. You want that buckshot to spread some, otherwise you may as well shoot slugs.

You can try it, but buckshot often patterns better from a looser choke, because the tighter ones can cause pellet deformation, and ill flying pellets.

If you want tight patterns, try Federal's flight control buckshot loads.

EVERY shotgun barrel is a law unto itself. Buy a box of each brand of 000 and pattern it. Do the same for 00, 0 and number 1. Pick the one that gives you the best pattern at the distance you want. Sometimes it'll work out of a full choke. Sometimes when the shot hits the choke it'll give the shot some back-spin (kinda like a curve ball) and cause the spread to be larger than it would be out of a cylinder bore.

000 is fun to play with. I killed a beaver under 3 feet of water with 000!

I kinda like number 1 buck in the 2 3/4" magnum load (27 .30 cal pellets). I occasionally work with a Federal Trapper and that's what he uses for animal control (coyotes and hogs) from the helocopter. It's deadly.

Now that I have a gun with a three inch chamber, I'm gonna have to pattern some 3" loads. Work, work, work!

Contrary to popular belief, full choke gives the tightest patterns with OO & OOO Buck. My 18 3/4" Remington 870 with screw-in full choke will keep all OO & OOO pellets in the kill zone at 25 yards and +50% on an IPSC target at 50 yards.

Mine likes 2 3/4" Winchester Super-X OOO best. Yours may do better with another brand. Finding the best load is trial & error.
