View Full Version : Good Cheap Vodka

I have been using Absolut, Crystal palace and a vodka I got from Russia.

The Absolut is to expensive for the quantity I use ($40 a bottle), I just tried a bottle of SKYY $16 for 1.5L but it tastes like everclear, (I am betting it's just ethanol with some odd flavoring)...

Any thing under $30 a 1.5 L bottle or 15 for a 750ml that tastes like vodka?

I might as well use ever clear and cut the shots in half...

Svedka

+1 on Svedka-- solid vodka for $15 and under. Also, in a similar price range, try Polar Ice Vodka (http://www.corby.ca/details.php?brandid=7&catid=1&productid=24)-- I bought a bottle of it at my grocery store because it was on sale and was very impressed.

And of course, there's always Smirnoff. If you put Smirnoff in a Grey Goose bottle, I bet 9 out of 10 vodka snobs would never know. It's a good vodka for the money.

If you're mixing, I'd just stick with Smirnoff.

A weird, but true story, about top vodka.
I forget which one of the top vodkas is was, but in the Absolute range.

An investor bought a cheap vodka company for a song. He changed the name, the packaging, and launched an ad campaign. He was able to quadruple the price, and got it!

Still the same stuff in the bottle, but connoisseurs prefer it to the "cheaper" stuff.

I'm gonna have to give Polar Ice a try. They were out of the 1.75L Svedka last time I went to the liquor store for vodka, and I saw the Polar Ice was in the same price range. On that day I wasn't ready to try something of which I'd never heard.

There are different grades of Smirnoff, and I always forget which ones suck and which are decent. Even the good Smirnoff always gives me heartburn, so I stay one step above that price range.

I'm on my way to Trader Joes' NOW to get a one-liter bottle for $9.99
So-called "discount" liquor store around-the-corner sells it
at the same price for a 750ml bottle!

I used to make custom fitted golf clubs. It cost so little to make them, including materials and time, that I was able to make a perfectly balanced set of custom fitted clubs at a very low price. They didn't sell very well, though.

Then I read an article about "perceived value", where they explained how everyone believes that "you get what you pay for", so I tripled my prices. I sold a lot more clubs, and the only difference was the price.

Squaw Man Wolfer, you are thinking of Grey Goose. Grey Goose was the first Vodka to come out at a higher price point, priced above Absolut. They did so purposefully because price indicates value (as cjlandry mentioned), plus it gave the Vodka snob appeal. It worked for Grey Goose and now there are some copy cats.

Is it really better than other Vodkas costing 2/3rds or 1/2 the price? Well, that's up to the consumer to decide.

Did this ever happen?

kalishnakov came out with his vodka. I have seen only one bottle. It was the "Gold" lable at almost $200.00 or so I was told but the other lables were less. No Idea on taste, he is not a drinker but a gun collector and won't open it.

I loved the lable, it said. Nothing goes through a body like Kalishnakov.

Well, I consider myself a pretty informed vodka drinker. I drink it on the rocks everyday.

Absolut is one of the few with a distinctive flavor. A little on the smokey side and one of my least favorites. Any level of Smirnoff gives me a headache and I avoid it.

I have tried most all brands and found almost no differences in tastes between Grey Goose, Stoli, Three Olives, Finlandia and Skyy. I usually buy 2 cases of the 1.75 liter bottles at a time, which is a two months supply. Depending on the current pricing, I usually get Finlandia or Skyy. If you drink at least 4 to 5 cocktails a day, after the second drink, you really can't tell what brand you are drinking, unless it's Absolut, because of its flavor.

One advantage of Kalishnikov vodka, is that in sub-zero temperatures, you can put it in the radiators of your T-34 tanks on the drive to Berlin.

When you get there, drain and serve for the victory party.

I've also heard that it has quite the reputation for reliability in combat conditions. It can be dragged through the mud, filled with sand, run over by tanks, and still give the Soviet Soldier a proper buzz.:wavey:

I've been bartending for four years and conducted eight taste tests with those that claim to be discriminating vodka drinkers. The tests have resulted in my conclusion that vodka's vodka.

It should be noted that in 2005 the Grey Goose brand was sold for $2 billion to Bacardi. The sale included name, images and marketing rights. No distilleries, bottling plants or even individual bottles of vodka were transferred in the sale.

http://promomagazine.com/news/Bacardi_Buys_Goose/

"Grey Goose is a top selling premium vodka brand in the United States," said Javier Ferran, president and CEO of Bacardi, in a statement. "It is a perfect fit with the Bacardi portfolio of premium brands and fills a significant category gap."

The Grey Goose brand will be managed by Bacardi U.S.A. in Miami.

Bacardi, a privately-held company, produces and markets such brands as Bacardi rum, Martini and Rossi vermouth, Dewar's scotch whisky and Bombay Sapphire gin.

 :animlol:

Yeah, "premium brands".

There are a whole lotta lotta of brands like that. A couple that come to mind:

Grey Poupon
Haagen Daaz
All of the fancy bottled waters

I learned a valuable lesson about perceived value when I was a frontline salesperson......was working a deal with a group of doctors in Shreveport. It was about to close. Well, it was the end of the quarter and my company needed a "little extra" from each of us and was bending huge on price. So, I pitched a new instrument to my customer as an add-on to the deal. Priced it WAY below list. The customer took one look at it and said, "We can do the deal we've been working on, but I don't want that other machine.....it must be a piece of **** if you're selling them at such a discount."

Lesson learned.

Concerning headaches those are caused from additives in the vodka that comes to the US. After having consumed some pretty hefty quantities while in Ukraine (by the way no mixers this is all shots) I have never had a headache. I am by no means a big drinker but have shared a 750ml bottle between two of us in a little over two hours! Ukraininans and Russian love their toasts:faint:
