I am doing some research into my family history, and there is one item of interest that I have not been able to get much info on from my mother (sole surviving family member). The item is a medal that belonged to my great grandfather. The actual medallion portion is an inscription mounted on a 1901 penny. The inscription reads "Capt Geo Thomas, Carnarvon chapter no. 5, GCQ, October 13th 1916". The reverse side is letters (KSHTWSST) surrounding an inner section with two crossed swords and some more symbols. I am attaching a scan of the medal and its case, although not much detail can be seen.

From my initial research this appears to be a medal from a masonic lodge, but obviously little detail is available. I would like to try and learn more about what this was for, if possible. Are there any masons who may know what this medal was for, or how I can research this further? Any help would be appreciated.

It is a Masonic coin, and they varied from organization to organization. Some were rather cheaply made, some very formal.

Your's indicates a membership in the York Rites of Masonry, one of the two "main" branches of Masonry to extend past the Third Degree. Your Grandfather was obviously a Royal Arch Mason.

(The other would be Scottish Rites.)

This is the coin of a "Marked Mason" and the information of your Grandfather's Masonic History is recorded where he was made a Mason.

As I am a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, (you CAN be both) I cannot tell you more about the coin, but will tell you that a quick call to your local Lodge that has a York Rite meeting will answer all the questions you have.

Your Grandfather was a good man. Perhaps you should consider following in his footsteps?

This is actually from a Holy Royal Arch chapter, an appendant body of a masonic lodge. Sometimes these 'pennies' are mounted on medals, usually in days of old. Nowadays - they are just loose 'coins', not mounted on anything.

And the letters are actually HTWSSTKS. Not in the order that you posted them.

(Hiram Tyrian, Widows Son, Sent to King Solomon)

Looks like the rest of the info was info about your relative, and the chapter he belonged to. You can most likely contact that chapter directly for more info.

Thanks guys. There is a local lodge that meets next week, so I might just drop by and see if they are willing to share any additional information.

I appreciate the offer Don, but I think I will try the local chapter first. If they prove unhelpful, I will definately let you know. Steve.
