Would just like to introduce myself to GT members. Residence far NW suburbs of Minneapolis with hobby-times of hunting, fishing, golfing, etc. Purchased new 19c, 3rd generation, Austria, minted near Dec. '07 or Jan. '08, test fired July '08, Smyrna, GA; she sure is a beauty.
My intent was to purchase and learn the 19c and then purchase a "normal" Glock 19 drop-in non-ported OEM barrel, or another G19 supplier non-ported barrel, so I would have either option available. Members know the discussions of ("C's vs "non-C's), I thought the threads were great and I learned a lot.
Having visited GT for many months garnering knowledge prior to purchase, I believed I was somewhat prepared. I confidently state, that from what I have read, researched and retained this is truly a professional group and forum; very good job!
I have not yet field stripped the 19c, maybe later today or tomorrow.
Now this is where things appear and get a little inky. I did casually look at the serial # for recent manufacturing, however, I didn't notice the 1 after the (Glock logo) on the barrel at time of purchase. The slide has the normal 3 alpha letters and 3 numbers, with no indication of a 1 on the slide.
Reviewed the GT serial no. research project prior to purchase and after, didn't see anything out of the ordinary, until I looked at the barrel serial no. more closely and found the # 1. Thought it might mean ported barrel "C" and a "0" would indicate a normal non-ported barrel. Since, I never read anything concerning this marking on any Supplier or GT supporter's web-site for spare parts, for barrels and slides; nor could I remember reading a post within the last year indicating a Variant # 1 barrel and slide; as I am still learning I still was wondering the true meaning of the 1 and it kept recurring in my mind, why?
So I called Glock with the serial # and was informed my G19 had a Variant # 1 barrel and slide (which by the way , the slide does not have the latent # 1 engraved). Reasoning was that it had a different milling machine do the machining work/process, and the barrels and slides were different from just a "normal" slide/barrel, i.e., "older/standard" G19's, that have or had universal part exchange and easy on-line purchase part selections. This applies to the barrels and slides only with Variant # 1 barrels and slides; all the other G19 parts are universal and exchangeable. I didn't
know this. Glock said this change took place several years ago.
On prior purchase research I remember information on the NYPD G19 incidents of either FTF, FTE etc, but that was the late 1990's, i.e., '97-'99 with no real conclusion or solution. Even in 2002 with some new Glock changes or something with EAE type serial nos., I didn't think that was applicable to my 19c, but it sure looks like it does.
Maybe all later G19's have Variant # 1 barrels and are marked with matching non-marked machined slides to eliminate the NYPD incidents, I just don't know and was too inexperienced to ask further details.
I do know Variant #1 barrels including their slides, are not interchangeable with any other G19 barrel and slide, which could be mistakenly ordered from internet dealers or suppliers.
At least to me this has some ramifications to all current and new GT members, at a minimum, even if it is just for informational purposes only, let alone the serial # project.
Maybe if this is somewhat reasonably important it could be referenced in this part of the forum, the Serial No. Project thread, or when ordering a barrel or slide, if not so be it.
