I finally got Ubuntu up and running on my old laptop. I have tried in the past, but could never get my wireless to work. I have 7.10 installed now, may update to 8.4 eventually.

The only issue I have as of now is that it doesn't seem to remember my wireless password after I reboot. :dunno:

I still have a bunch of playing to do to see how to install stuff and the like. We'll see. I can't say I like the terminal all that much, seems antiquated to me.

What wireless device are you using, and how did you set it up?(ndiswrapper, madwifi, etc)? This might help...

Use caution "upgrading"... to 8.04.. There's been a LOT of problems reported in the channel here lately about the upgrade process dying halfway through... Not really sure what the problem is, but I've saw it several times over the last week or so. Most just ended up clean installing 8.04 from a CD.

Terminal is awesome when you get the hang of it. I still generally prefer a GUI, but somethings via terminal doesn't bother me.. What are you trying to install that you thin you'll have problems with? Stick with whats in the repositories if at all possible.

It's a Dell Inspiron 9100 with a Dell Wireless 1350 WLAN MiniPCI Card.

I just had to install the restricted driver and configure under "network".

Everything seems to run fine. It's just a pain to have to reenter my WPA passphrase every tine I boot.

Did a fresh install of 8.04 and it's working fine now.

Thats odd....

To see how Linux identifies the chipset of the device run lspci in a terminal your device? Its probably either Intel, Atheros, Broadcom. Those are the 3 most common, with a splattering of Ralink and Cisco out there. Cisco seems to be a bit more common in Thinkpads...

lspci will give you an output something like this... it'll help you troubleshoot a little better when having problems w/ a device. Rarely does the actual device name help when searching w/ google, but if you google the lspci output(for instance below, "Problems with Atheros AR242x Wireless Ubuntu 8.04) or some such, you'll get a lot more hits.

Wait, nevermind... I just saw you did a fresh install of 8.04, as opposed to trying 7.10 again...

That makes a little more sense.
