My boss has a mal-ware program on his computer called "antivirus xp 2008" or "xp 2008 anitvirus" or some such thing.

I am trying to get rid of it. It is being a major pain in butt and nothing seems to be working. I have AVG, spyware blaster, ad-aware, and search and destroy. None of them are having any effect on it.

I need some suggestions. I am not comfortab;e removing it manually, because my boss and I are both neanderthals when it comes to computers. We can BARELY type. We are also cheap ass's due to poverty (ok so that's just me). So, I am looking for a freeware program that will kill this thing.

Check AVG's home page. They may have a removal tool for this particular bug.

I got that somehow. I ended up using the trial of malware something or other. Its a tricky one. It seems like it hides and re spawns itself.

I got that virus..

See my thread here: http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=898593

I had to slick my drive and reinstall XP...

This was the toughest virus I've ever had to clear, and I tried EVERYTHING...multiple anti-virus programs, supposed fixes, manually edited the registry following directions etc..

It just would not go away...

An afternoon spent backing up important docs and pics and reinstalling XP though...problem solved..

Here is what I usually do for spyware infections (I used to deal with 2-3 infections a day at my old job).
Download the following on a clean computer and put them on a USB drive:
ComboFix (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
WinSock XP Fix (http://majorgeeks.com/download4372.html)
SmitFraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe)
VundoFix (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4)
CCleaner Portable (http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-portable)
Spybot AND Latest Manual Definition Updates (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)
On the infected maching, go to Start->Run and type in "msconfig".
Go to the "BOOT.ini" tab and place a check mark next to "/SAFEBOOT". (This ensures that while you're working, the machine will always boot into safe mode.)
Reboot the target machine.
Open CCleaner and select ALL options. Click "Run Cleaner" after selecting everything.
Also run the CCleaner registry and click "Fix selected issues". Run registry clean 2-3x.
Run ComboFix and let it reboot machine.
Run VundoFix.
Run SmitFraudFix (select option 2, then option 3, choosing yes for registry cleaning when prompted).
Reboot.
Install Spybot and manual updates.
Run Spybot scan and delete everything found. Also run the Immunize function.
Reboot.
Run all CCleaner functions one more time.
Reverse changes in msconfig.Remember, EVERYTHING must be done in SAFE MODE!

Also, here's a Bleeping Computer article on removing this malware:

I somehow got this crap on Sunday. Omg it is the worst thing I have had to deal with. It keeps re-appearing on me and driving me crazy. :steamed:

I will have to try grokdesigns' method when I have time tomorrow.

My sister had this one, and it would change the screen resolution and put a fake Windows XP screen that looked like Windows was loading (the black screen with the logo in the middle). Pretty weird.
