View Full Version : The great question, Glock 30 vs/or Glock 19????
Ok, here is my deal. I own a 30, 34, 22. I enjoy them all. Lately I have been looking to consolidate calibers. I know, the age old which is better question as far as calibers go, but, truthfully, I am over it, way over it.
My friend offered me a straight up trade: his 19 for my 30. I love my 30, perfect Glock, but shooting it is nearly unaffordable now because of ammo costs. it's thick to carry (and Im 6'2) and it fires the 230 grain projectile at a snails pace out of the sub four inch barrel.
I shoot both very well, and I have been around long enough to know all the calibers work and do their part. I like the idea of two 9mm and a 40, as opposed to one of each. I like the idea of 15 rounds of a lighter flatter trajectory round in a slimmer lighter package without a grip extension.
All that being said, it still is NOT an easy decision.....never is!!
First of all being 6'2" means nothing as far as carrying a G30. As far a bullet speed..A dirtbag villian won't be cronographing your shots to his chest. Keep the G30, trade the G22 for the G19.
Tough Call. Don't sweat it. If you want to try out the 19, trade and do it. You can always purchase another 30 in the future if you miss it.

Actually I'd much rather trade the 22 for the 30, but its not the offer on the table. Being 6'2 and a skinny 245 means I can/should be able to carry whatever no problem, but my fat 30 still gives me issues....I'm sure everyone is different though.

Well good luck either way, I traded a Glock 17 ten years ago and regreted it. So in June I bought another..Think about it and be sure. Financial times change..not always for the good.

just buy a g19 got ride of my g30 and i regretted it.
I'm one of many who loves the 19...so I'm for the trade. You'll also save some $ on 9mm ammo vs .45 unless you re-load.

Well I traded my G19C for a G30 and then I sold the G30 and bought another G19C and that's what I'm staying with

At the end of the world as we know it, .40 ammo will run out long before .45 ammo does.
Trade the 22 for the 19.
If you can conceal a 22 you can conceal a 30. Seriously.

I could not have said this better
That would be tough choice. I have both but if I could only keep one it'd be the G19 although I wouldn't trade my 30 for one. The 34 is my next Glock.
If it were me, I'd lose the 22 quick. I'm a self-confessed .40 hater and the (2) 22's I had had several 'issues'.
I'd either run all 9mm's, or 2 9mm's (17 and 26 in my case) and a .45.
I said I'd no longer need .45's due to ammo cost and bringing up my shooting ability. However, after picking up a new 30SF I can't imagine getting rid of it.
Hopefully this doesn't spiral into a "9 vs 45" thread.

You answered your own question several times over:
You are over the caliber question:
Lately I have been looking to consolidate calibers. I know, the age old which is better question as far as calibers go, but, truthfully, I am over it, way over it.
You like the capacity of the pistol and lack of need for extensions
I like the idea of 15 rounds of a lighter flatter trajectory round in a slimmer lighter package without a grip extension.
We all trade and buy and sell pistols, many times we suffer from sellers regret.
All of that said, I carry a G19 all day (a G26 off duty). I never worry about caliber performance.
Sounds like you have already made up your mind and are looking for some validation. Do it and have fun. If you decide to change, either trade it back of trade it for a new one.
Also, if you really decide you want a .45, try either a GAP pistol (G37,38,39) or there's a thread floating around here about the G36 slide on a G30 Frame.
Good luck and Be Safe.

IMO, the Glock 19 compact frame/size is perfect and shooting 9mm is cheap and effective with modern self defense loads.
On the other hand, NEVER SELL a gun that you shoot well and works well for you.
I am myself not a fan of the Glock 30/30sf, but if 45acp is too expensive to shoot, just keep it for CCW and shoot maybe 50 rounds a month just so you don't forget how to use it.
I recently switched my Glock 19c daily CCW to a Glock 38 because it's a 45caliber, is still small framed and accurate with less recoil than the Glock 30/36 I've fired before.
I shoot 50-100 rounds per range visit, and maybe a mag of Federal HST's that I carry in it.
45gap ammo is expensive as 45acp if not more, but I will be reloading it in a few weeks so that should make it cheaper to shoot.
Get a G-19. and never sell or trade it. After that, explore the Glock line-up as wallet will allow. Good luck

I don't ever carry my 22, just the 30, and his offer isnt for the 22, he has one it's for the 30 for his 19.....
Great points however I can keep the 22 for shooting major divisions and have a g-17 barrel on hand to have 3 9mm glocks at will. That is a big issue for me, the fact that all three of my glocks can be synchronized with a simple barrel swap on the 22.
I love my g30. Shooting it is no longer affordable for me and does not look like it ever will be again unless I start to reload. and also as far as carrying goes, call me silly but I like the idea of 15 rounds per mag instead of 10, even if it is just 9mm!
Also my friend is throwing in his crimson trace on the deal. I probably won't use it, but I can always sell it off for some ammo!

I can't disagree with your logic there. 16rnds vs 11 IS better, although I favor the 45 bullet vs a 9mm, the 9mm works wonderfully with today's modern self defense ammo.
If you're getting a 3rd gen Glock 19 with CT grips traded for your glock 30, DO IT.
you're getting about $100-$125 more for your gun than he is, and you can always pickup a used glock 30 for about $450 easily.
Ps. the Crimson Trace Laser grips work really well. I've had one on my Glock 19c and now I moved it on my Glock 38 and it is dead on accurate and allows for faster targeting than with the sights in a stress drill.

disreguard my last post. get the g19. and enjoy yourself. the only reason i have a g23 is they didnt have a g19. but ive wanted another glock for a while. and this one is sweet.
Well that's a tough call. I love the 19 but I wanted a 30 as well. I still want a .45. I have the 9mm covered but would like to have just one .45. I think if I were you I would trade or sell the 22 and buy a new 19 and keep your 30. Just use it as a HD gun and shoot it every now and then.
When I get my .45 I don't plan to shoot it much. Maybe once a month to stay familiar with it. My 19 or 26 will still be my main go to carry/range guns.
... I love my g30. Shooting it is no longer affordable for me and does not look like it ever will be again ...

Seems to me you've answered your own question. I can't afford to shoot .45acp regularly, I no longer bother to reload and the G30 is a fat CCW gun. Also, I always preferred the 1911 for a .45acp launch vehicle anyway. I'd trade for the G19.
The CT grip is a huge incentive as you can sell it. It's a better deal for you I think you should take before your friend wises up.
Maybe you should consider buying a 9mm conversion barrel and some G-17 mags for the G-22. That would give you two 9mm's and one .45. Unless you find that the G-19 is considerably easier for you to conceal then the G-22 you could save yourself a lot of trouble. If you are worried about the reliability of the conversion barrel just use the stock .40 barrel whey you carry the G-22 for self defense.
I would take a 19 over a 30 any day of the week. However, I am not impartial and own 4 19's so take my opinion lightly.

You know, I was in a similar situation not long ago. I had the "G-19" fever. I had had a G-30 for a long time and was having some difficulty consolidating a carry round that I judged might be effective or rather, more effective than FMJ @230g. because of the G-30's shorter barrel. Bottom line is that I sold the 30 to a friend. Turns out he wasn't crazy about the width and I was sorry I sold it because I'd become very accurate with it. Eventually I bought it back. While I'd still like to get a 19, I've got the 17 and like it well enough. While I'd probably carry the 19 as gleefully as I do the 30 and like that "15 rounds" business over 10 rounds, what I've come to know as of recently that has tamed the G-19 fever somewhat is something called "Federeal 230g.+P HST." -P45HST1- I don't sweat the 10 rounds as opposed to 15 so much now. Not that I should have either because 10+1 with a .45 that accurate ain't bad IMHO.
I'm not going on record as saying the cost of all metal is going to go down and stay down, OK? However, the prices are going down as of very recently (I read it yesterday) as oil continues to fall and the dollar gains strength. Will ammo prices fall accordingly? Your guess is as good as mine.
In have a G19 and bought a G30SF maybe about a month ago...I carried it for a while and always kept going back to the G19..the G30 ,IMO only, was too thick and heavy....so I sold it and just bought a G26 to go along with the 19 and couldnt be happier...I would make the trade and get the 19 with the CTC grips...you can't go wrong!!
