View Full Version : Dry firing? Bad for Glocks?
I read a post on another site that claims dry firing will cause the breech face to crack.....:wow:.....Please tell me this guy is just a Glock-Hater and trying to rain on my parade........:crying:.......A lot of my practice involves dry firing at the TV and I'm also getting my daughter into the shoot-the-tv badguy-and-call-your-shot game as well.........All I've ever read and heard about Glocks is how idiot proof and bullet proof they are......Now this.....:faint:
Quick, somebody tell me it's ok to dry fire my 21 and 17.........Thanks,B.

I have an 11 yr old G22 and dry fire it very often , sometime balancing a nickel on the slide while dry fireing to help me not "anticipate the trigger break" and I have did this for , like I said 11 yrs and still has the same parts it came with . No problems ! Glocks are the Toyotas of handguns:supergrin:

Not to get off subject , but Tennessee Slim , do you know of any gun shop in the Nashville area that has a Glock 21SF with the Glock rail and a regular mag release and not the ambi mag release? Guns andLeather has only the one with the ambi mag release.

I read this too...among other wild claims he was making. If I remember, he ended up getting his thread locked.
No, I've never personally seen a Glock with a cracked breech face because of dry-firing. If they did manage to crack it, it was due to something else stupid that they were doing. I've seen a pic of one on the internet where a guy was claiming it cracked from dry-fire, but, well, this is the internet....

As thick as the breech is how in the hell would a simple firing pin cause a cracked breech face? This sounds like a bunch of bull from the guy who told him that .

In the instructions that come with a new Glock, where they're explaining how to remove the slide, they tell you that you have to dry fire the gun to put the trigger in the rearward position before you can get the slide off. I wouldn't think it's so bad if they made the gun so that you have to do this. But of course they didn't exactly claim that doing it million times was OK either. The instructions with my gun said nothing to settle issue, and I was dissapointed.

Properly maintained and used, they do not fail.
Put as many miles on it as you like.
I have never been told that dry firing a Glock was bad. My first Glock was a model 17 I qualified with the FDLE using this gun. Our first day of qualification consisted of about one hour of dry firing to get used to trigger pull. Then over the next two weeks I fired 2,000 rounds with no malfunctions. So I dont believe you will have any problems.

During the 4 day defensive handgun course at Front Sight we must have dry fired 200 times minimum and each of us were using our own weapons of various brand and model. The instructors there are very knowledgeable on all types of handguns and they never said anything about dryfire damage. I personally have dry fired my G21 a couple of thousand times since april and no problems yet.

If you think about it...the breech face is what absorbs the shock when the bullet is launched down the barrel. Dry firing can cause breaking of the firing pin on some pistols...but it won't hurt the breech face. And dry firing a GLOCK won't harm the firing pin...so your good!

My G17 has been dry-fired literally thousands of time (if not tens of thousands). No problems here!
Dry-fire practice is ESSENTIAL to shooting a handgun more accurately.

I'm definately not an english major especially when it comes to grammar and punctuation. Even I was wondering about that. Is that like a military or Philippines thing?

Best way to search Glocktalk (and other websites) is to use Google.
Type what you want to search, then :site, then site name followed by .com .org .net etc
example: dry firing site:glocktalk.com
I read that thread about dry firing Glocks on that other site. The OP says he is a armourer. I dry fire my Glocks countless times and never had an issue.

Saw a picture of it once, here on GT. Saw it in person once, on a GLOCK 23, that occurred during dry firing. Was it caused by dry firing? GLOCK wouldn't say, but it happened during dry firing (the only time such an event could occur). The breech face is actually rather slim at the end of the firing pin channel. GLOCK requested the pistol back, and replaced the slide (with brand new night sights installed), no questions asked. Don't worry, the chances of it happening to you are slight.

Ditto on the snap caps just for precaution. It will be probably good also for the striker pin.

In the pictures posted by sigcalcatrant, I wonder if the cracks could have been caused by simply firing the gun, and not by dry firing it. The pressure of firing a shell puts a hammer-like shock load on that same surface, and you'd still expect the crack to begin in the exact same place - right at the corners of the firing pin hole, where the corner provides a stress concentration.

These are actually the photos of MY G17, if you search GT you can see when I first post them 3 years ago. You can also find these photos in sniperworld.com, the owner asked my permission to post them on his site.
The gun was less than 2 years old when the problem occured.
It ran about 1500 standard pressure fmj rnds (S&B, WWB, etc)..no +P+ or any special ammo.
It was my first glock ever and I did some moderate dry firing practice training to get used to the trigger.
One day, while dry firing I heard an odd "click" and I saw the crack.
It took me several month to get a new slide because glock doesn't have official representation in Israel. Finally I got a new slide, serial starts with the letter "S" follows by 5 digits.
Since then, I do dry fire only with snap caps just to be on the safe side.
I spoke with Glock customer service on this very subject. They told me that I shouldn't dry fire anymore than needed, in other words, only for taking my Glock apart, not for training.
But I think that is just a "corporate" blanket answer to the question.
I say dry fire all you want, if the unthinkable happens and it cracks, glock will replace it. Though I understand having mixed serials numbers would suck, but I doubt it would happen in your lifetime anyways.

[QUOTE=Ranger.357;11090095]Great website. Search engine...not so much.
Which is why I made my comment about getting nothing when I searched for search, kind of like googling Google or some other inane computer function.
As for all the dry fire questions, snap caps might be the answer, just don't pull the slide so far back that you eject them.
