What to expect from a new mossberg 590A1

I just put one on order and love the look and feel of this shotgun and have never seen any while being active duty down range, but have heard they are used throughout the military. I am buying it as a Home defense/SHTF shotgun, I had to add the SHTF part. I have a maverick 88 but I like the solid feel of this shotgun and ghost ring sights seem very fast. Well I want to know what to expect, and what is the best range ammo and what would be the best defense load, I have some 3" magnums left, and Is there anything to do to an already apparently dependable shotgun.

I bought a 590A1 a few weeks ago and I put nearly 150 shells through it without any failures.

I have heard that Mossberg's springs kind of suck, and comparing the Mossberg magazine spring to the one that came with my Remington, I kind of agree. The spring does seem kind of weak, although it had no problems with being good enough to feed my shotgun. I don't know if it is absolutely necessary to replace, but I think I might get a better spring at some point.
