To the editor:

I am writing in response to Dennis R. Forslund’s letter claiming that Barack Obama, if elected, will “take away our guns.” While Forslund is correct in asserting that people from all over the world have come to America in the hope of finding a better life here than they could elsewhere, it is not necessarily true that they came here with the hope of being able to pack a gun.

There are many hardworking Americans who do not have guns and do not feel safer knowing that easy access to guns makes it possible for us to have drive-by shootings on College Road. We are in favor of sensible licensing and control of firearms. You need a license to drive a car. There is no reason why you should not have to have a license to bear arms.

To suggest that reasonable gun control is tantamount to “taking away our guns” makes about as much sense as saying registering cars is the first step on a slippery slope leading to government confiscation of cars.

Barack Obama is on the record as saying he supports the Second Amendment right to bear arms, and he understands that guns are an important part of our culture. The fact that he also supports regulation of the traffic in firearms is perfectly consistent with any reasonable reading of the Second Amendment.

It's a shame that people with a phobia has any say in what the the rest of the population must do or not do.

Phobia means irrational fear and that's exactly what the letter writer has about firearms. I suggest she immediately seek a mental health that can assist her overcome this phobia rather than restrict what everyone else can or cannot do based on it.

Please seek help, it's there for you.

There are many like this and both sexes as you well know.

Have a friend who says "I hate guns!"

This is a liberal who was shot in the neck during a convenience store robbery. He was the only witness who testified against this criminal with a string of robberies. He does not like to talk about it.

Now this is interesting: His father borrowed a retired cop's 38 and sat guard outside his room in the hosbital so the criminal on bail could not kill the only witness; one of his brothers relieved his father and so he had an armed guard 24/7 until he got home. Wonder if that bothered him; honestly dont know and his relatives would not have listened if he said dont do it.

There are irrational fears out there. For this fellow I merely say I understand why you feel that way -- I realize no argument under the sun will change his mind. I also know that his dad and brother would take up arms to protect their family again in a heart beat.

Alaska has some of the best gun laws(or lack of laws) in the country. Love that place.
