Another child is dead because of gun access
August 22, 2008
There was another shooting death in Gary on Aug. 15.
It didn't involve illegal drug trafficking.
It also wasn't gang-related.
It wasn't a drive-by shooting.
Robbery wasn't a motive.
And it didn't involve a love affair gone bad.
This shooting won't add to the city's homicide totals.
Police said it was an accident.
A brother shot and killed his sister. He was 12 years old. She was 14.
Unlike many of Gary's shootings, this one didn't happen on the streets. It occurred in the living room of their home in Aetna.
Police gave this account of the shooting:
Tyaty'Anna Crayton and some friends were dancing early in the evening. When she and her brother began teasing each other, Tyaty'Anna went into their parents' bedroom and returned with the gun -- joking about firing it.
Tyaty'Anna's brother reached for the gun to take it away from his sister. The gun went off and Tyaty'Anna died instantly as a result of a gunshot wound to the head.
The witnesses said it appeared fairly evident that Tyaty'Anna was familiar with the gun and where it was kept in the home.
A young girl is dead. Her younger brother will have to cope with his involvement in the shooting. And the parents will forever have to answer the question as to why the gun wasn't secured away from the children.
We have long questioned the need for guns to be kept in the home. While it may provide a sense of security for the owner, it too often results in tragic deaths as we witnessed a week ago.
When will we learn?

Preaching to the choir, I know...
But, had this kid not been playing with a gun, this accident would never have happened. Guns aren't toys, as we all know. That's something all four of my kids have been/are being taught. They have had guns in their lives since birth (yes, I was carrying when the wife gave birth...what of it?) and they look at guns at just another tool.
Yeah, it's a potentially dangerous tool, and one that's really fun to use, but still just a tool. The kids wouldn't play with a gun, any more than they'd play with a running chainsaw. They just know better.
Plus, guns aren't a big deal. I swear, when they get older (oldest is 9), they're gonna think other adults are weird because they DON'T carry. Mommy and Daddy both out on guns before leaving the house, why doesn't everyone else?
Again, preaching to the choir here, but...education and discipline is the key to gun safety with children. If one of mine even made a comment about shooting someone with a gun, they'd likely get backhanded. Were I to catch one screwing around with a gun as described in the story above, they'd not be able to sit down for a week or so.
Guns aren't toys....educate your kids!

The parents have no one to blame but themselves.
It's sad and unfortunate that the little girl is dead...over something that could have been prevented. Irresponsible ignorant parenting at it's finest. :steamed:

Oh the drama.
Of typing small sentences.
One at a time.
To try for dramatic effect of my words.
When will we learn?

As long as it wasn't during conception.

Charge the parents with criminal negligence. Not only for leaving the gun within the child's easy access, but for not teaching them gun safety. When my brothers and I were that age there were over 35 (unlocked) guns in the house, and this accident would have been impossible in our home, because our dad taught us gun safety and took us shooting, which eliminated our desire to play with the guns behind dad's back.

Gary IN?
Place is a war zone.
The young girl was mad, got a weapon, pointed it at another kid, who took it away from her and shot her with it.
Looks like her Kung Fu wasn't strong.
This spin is just silly. "I was just playing..." The sad part is that this is one of those examples about telling a lie often enough, loudly enough and people will believe it.
She wasn't just playing. She was mad, she pulled a gun, and got it taken away and killed with it. Now blame the tool, not her.

Not much more one has to read after that.
I personally prefer not to claim Gary as part of Indiana.....can't we just donate the land to a nearby state?

Recently I've been playing with this:
http://webappa.cdc.gov/sasweb/ncipc/mortrate10_sy.html
Apparently, for kids up to the age of 14, firearms (used intentionally or accidentally) were involved in the deaths of 404 children in 2005.
Another poster alluded to this - in the same year and same age range, 856 children died of drowning.
Fill in your swimming pool - save the children!

I totally misread that then. I thought the kid that actually retrieved the gun was the one that was killed. I :dunno: now

Well, I may not have had it "on", but it was nearby.
IIRC, I was in uniform for my the birth of my 3rd child (2nd daughter). Wife called me in the middle of roll call to inform me she was going into labor. I'm pretty sure I stayed in uniform the whole night, until I went home to take take of the other kids after the new one was safely delivered.
