View Full Version : Worst Song by Best Band?

Has this one been done yet? The thread will be more interesting if you confine your choices to songs made when a band was in their prime. e.g. no post-Keith Moon Who allowed.

A few that come to mind...

You could even classify these as bad songs from amazing albums:
Beatles - Ob La Di, Ob La Da
Rolling Stones - Turd on the Run

I'll think of more...

Steve Miller Band. "Take the Money and Run".

Besides being possibly the most stupid, anti-climatic song ever written about crime, they actually try to rhyme "Texas" and "facts is".

God will punish that. Yes, he will.

Nods to Journey "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'".

Three minutes fifty one seconds stretched to what seems like 19 minutes of NA NA NA NAAA NA NA, NA NA NA NA NA, NA NA NA NAAAA, NA NA NA NA NA.

Couldn't these fools have written a couple more verses and made a great song?

Come on cj.......Don't be dissin' the Zep.

My second favorite band of all time. I don't think there's a musician alive who won't admit that some crappy music of theirs got released on an album at some point in time.

This is one of a few Zep songs that sucks. I can't believe it still gets occasional airplay. It didn't even sound good "back in the day", when "everyone" was ingesting substances that made some other crappy songs sound good.

Just a personal opinion. Honestly, I don't care at all now, but back in the day I used to watch them do live shows in Gainesville, and then after they made the move, I thought their whole direction as a band changed for the worse. Like I said, it's just my opinion. (Make that OLD opinion) In fact, they became more famous afterward. I guess that means my old taste in music wasn't too commercial.

Did you hear that song and try to actually measure out how many feet three steps are? Just wondering, because "9 foot" is nowhere in the lyrics to that song.

Anyways, I'd like to nominate The Beatles as well...but no song in particular....just 495 of their 500 songs.

Metallica - everything off of the 'St. Anger' album

You know, pretty much everything Metallica released after the black album has been terrible, and even the stuff off that record wasn't that great, compared to earlier stuff. Then Kirk Hammet started painting his fingernails and James Hetfield went to rehab and the whole thing went straight to hell.

They're lame now. Bah.

It's because they're LAME.

Also:

I guess this is as appropriate a place as any for me to make a confession, since I'm too lazy to make another thread.

I hate the Beatles. It may be because I'm young (I'm 28) and missed any cultural significance to their rise to fame, but I think pretty much everything they've ever done is the most boring **** I've ever heard in my entire life. I have pretty varied and wide-ranging tastes in music, and I'll give anything a try, but every time I listen to the Beatles I'm really underwhelmed, and whenever people talk about how great they are and how much they love their music, it confuses and annoys me, because I don't get it.

I'm glad that's off my chest. I feel better now.

Metallica didn't used to be lame... Ride the Lightning is seminal metal music, unparalleled and uncontested as a straight-forward, non-concept album, and Master of Puppets is probably their collective peak, but they're not hungry anymore. No edge, no bite, no axe to grind, no drive. They're artisan's anymore...

As to the Beatle's, it reminds of something my 17 year old daughter told me. She plugged in Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon for the first time recently, and was disappointed... I had to tell her that it was both timeless and dated at the same time, that it was crucial to the development of all music, and looking at it with 21st century eyes would leave her disappointed. Ya gotta take them as they were, at that time, and let the music happen.

Same thing's true with the Beatles. I'm not a huge fan, but I'm appreciative. No other band has raised the bar so much, and at the same had as many hits as they did. Beatle's music is a tapestry, not a singular event musically.

Give them a chance, and be unjudgemental, just let it happen... you may find an appreciation. If not, no loss, I understand.

Beatles - Revolution 9 (this is not Revolution) off of the White album.

They keep repeating "Number nine, number nine"

Not even a song really. Just John and Yoko, splicing together a bunch of tape loops and odds and ends in a sound experiment.
One of the reasons the other Beatles got really pissed at John. Especially George who at the time had to argue long and hard to get even one song on an album, and this gets on?
Actually it doesn't annoy me nearly as much now as it used to.

Another song by the Beatles I don't care for is, Your Mother Should Know.

Tell her to forget the lyrics and listen to the instruments. I hated the Beatles when I was younger, but one day they played "A Day in the Life" on the classic rock station (back when the term "classic rock" was first coming into vogue).

I'd heard that song a thousand times before, but for some reason I heard it on that day in a way I'd never heard it before (no, I wasn't on drugs or drinking then).

After that, I started listening to their music more and more. The lyrics were the least of the Beatles talents.

Of course, like every other major hit band in history, they'd have been nothing if they hadn't been marketed brilliantly.

Their instrumentals are fantastic!

It's interesting how many songs get trashed by one person and defended by another.
It might be partly because songs like "Stairway to Heaven" have been played to DEATH on the radio and elsewhere.
Even people like me (who bought the first four Led Zep albums as soon as they came out) have gotten sick of it due to overexposure.
I forgot that it was an incredible song after the first 12,043 times I heard it.

I came here to nominate "Money" by Pink Floyd, but I'm probably just tired of hearing it so often for the last 35 years, too.

Might be kind of the same deal for younger Beatles non-fans.
You've heard a lot of Beatles influenced music since birth, whether it was performed by the Beatles or a million imitators.
It's hard to imagine now, but it was really cool to hear their kind of music for the first time, before everyone else on Earth copied it and did it to death.
In the early sixties their music stood out in a way that has no current parallel that I can think of.

Still...

Q: When did Paul McCartney write "Silly Love Songs" ?

A: From 1963 through at least 2008 !
