View Full Version : Interesting thing happened at Safeway tonight.
I am coming out of the Safeway and there is a guy with a coat hanger trying to open a locked car. I was about to go back in and get a employee to look into it when I see a Kent police officer parked one row over, just sitting in his car.
So I walked over to him, said hello officer, it looks like someone is either trying to get his car unlocked because he locked himself out, or he's trying to break into a car, over there.
I pointed to the scene and the officer looked over, said thanks, he'd take care of it and started his car and slowly drove around to come up from behind the guy with the coat hanger.
I watched along with about a half dozen other customers to see what was gonna happen.
Turns out it was his car after all, and the officer opened the door for the guy in about 2 seconds.
The only reason I relate all this is because it just seems so rare that a LEO is right there when you need one.

Slim Jims are a wonderful tool, aren't they?
I know most LEO's won't touch a car these days due to liability and messin' up a car's locks. Good on him for doing the right thing.

It could be that Safeway hires local LEOs for nightime security (and some deptments allow them to be in uniform/use squad if hiring approved thru city)
I kinda sounds like the Officer's "situational awareness" was in white.
don't seem to interesting story to me. What car their nowadays is going to use a coat hanger wire?
But it great that you help get somebody involved in getting the door open. I have triple AAA for that, plus my own slim jim and window wedge and other accessories ;)
Good job to the LEO:cool::wavey:

Sorry if it wasn't exciting enough for you, but then, that wasn't the point of the story.
And, it wasn't a new car. Probably at least 20 years old.

If not, that requires another officer come and re-lock the gentleman out of his car, correct?

You would be surprised what you can unlock a car door with. At work a few weeks ago I unlocked a lady's minivan with a quarter inch wooden dowel. I got it in the window and hit the power locks. Took me all of 5 seconds.

The officer would of shot out the window but he was only carrying his dept. issued 9mm. Too bad that this didnt happen in the mall parking lot. I hear those security guards are better armed for helping the poor citizens that are locked out of their car.

I think it's funny that you and half dozen people watching a person trying to unlock the door with coat hanger wire. Things must be very boring in seattle.

A couple years ago my friend was pulled over for having a tail light out. No biggie, until the police officers do a DUI check and decide that even though he passed the test, he would have to go to the station for a blood test. They also asked him if they could search the car. My friend said fine, gave them the keys and sat on the curb while they did their thing.
I get a phone call from my friend, asking to drive his car back to his place. Shortly after, another buddy and I arrive and find our friend in the cop car(to go to the station for blood work). I ask the police officers if I could drive his car back to his house so it didn't get towed or broken into etc.. No problem they said.
It turns out that they locked the keys in the trunk. Again, no biggie I thought. So I ask them if they could slim-jim the door open so I could retrieve the keys and be on my way etc..
"Oh sorry, we don't do that."
LOL
He never did get charged with anything, due to him not being a drinker/drug user.
I had to slim-jim the door open myself later on in the night.

I was thinking the same thing and in relationship to our mall ninja CCWer forum members. I could see a CCW'er run out and pulling a gun with ccw badge saying " stop, stop, back away from the car" and then the driver saying " but I lock my keys in my ride "
now that would be interesting

Even cooler if half of the dozen people watching all had CCWs, and the cops arrive to see 7 strangers in a parking lot all pointing guns at each other, and some poor fool just trying to get to his keys so he can get home before the milk spoils.

I nearly dropped my presidente beer on that one

We use airjacks now and just pop them open with a rod.

Yup. Leatherman + radio antenna = vehicle entry tools.

Did you get cited for exposing yourself in public?

What a tool (no pun intended) using a slim jim. Everbody knows all you need is a cell phone and a tennis ball.
I once got in my '69 Camaro using a box panel from Cocoa Puffs. This was pre-cell phone era.
