I am really close to picking up a G20, but have a few ?'s first. How hard is it really to get 10mm ammo? How good (this is for the G20 owners) is this round stacked up against other SD rounds? I would also like to get the whole shooting .40 out of it. I am not to sold on doing that personally. Anything you guys can add to help with this would be great, also which brand of 10mm is the standard/shoots the best out of a G20? I know some questions here r going to be opinion, but the opinions I READ HERE ARE RESPECTED. THANKS F3

10mm is a good round, but finding it locally will be a problem. But, if you order online you'll be okay, but it will still be expensive. Winchester, CorBon, Hornady, DoubleTap and Buffalo Bore all make great ammo. DoubleTap is probably the best bang for the buck considering its enhanced power and 50rd boxes.

To shoot .40 out of it, you'll have to get a LoneWolf conversion barrel which will probably run close to, or a little over, $100. I have two 10's, a Glock 20 and a Kimber Eclipse. I like it except for price, that's the 10's biggest fault, and I even reload.

All my local gun shops, and the ranges where I shoot, carry 10mm rounds. I prefer to buy mine from DoubleTap: when you buy 1000 rounds to get the free shipping, it's about the same price as the local stores.

As for its SD quality... it is the preferred handgun round for use against bears.

I concur with SDGlock. Have a G20C myself. Ammo is readily available online (with current ammo prices, it pretty much doesn't even make sense to buy it any other way). The barrel is really all you need. Its chamber is shorter to accept the shorter cartridge, I guess that would mean the barrel extends a bit further back too.

The other question you had about how it stacks up is totally subjective, and I've read too many caliber wars recently. But as far as I'm concerned, its the best round available other than rounds with AP capability - .223, 9X25 Dillon (anecdotally and marginally), Tokarovs with a steel jacket.

It has more muzzle energy than any other pistol caliber (short of .44s in semi-autos -- but from what I hear Desert Eagles aren't reliable enough for SD). It has more momentum than most, if not all pistol rounds. And you can still put plenty in the gun, up to 21 using an Arredondo extended base. My non-ported barrels are for .40 and 9X25, so I can only comment on the recoil from a factor ported barrel. In my opinion that's much more favorable than a .40 from a non-ported barrel - a lot less snap, and not much more push either.

I have yet to shoot my new G20 but here are my thoughts anyway. Most gun shops sale the ammo, georgia arms has the best prices for target and defense. Double tap has some of the best(hottest) factory loads. As for as shooting 40cal out of it, I really dont understand that either. Its the same bullet but I guess it is cheapest way to target practice with the G20 if you buy a conversion barrel. I've bought some Federal target 180gr. 10mm and will try the gun out today. My intent is to get a storm lake barrel and a 22lb. recoil spring before I use any hot loads in it. Overall it looks to be a nice full size gun. Mine grips very well with the hogue grips.

Most places sell 10mm, but if there isn't anywhere local you can buy it, theres always the internet. In my opinion the 10mm is the best semi auto pistol cartridge around. My daily carry is either my G20 or G29 loaded with Double Tap 165gr Gold Dots, and I feel very well protected as far as SD goes.

G20 is a amazing handgun and highly recommend you pick one up. The ammo is available at most places, if not again like everyone else has said hop on line and pick some up. You seriously can not pick up a better defense caliber, so much brute power. But controllable for those smaller members of the family. I went shooting with a friend who is 5'4" 115lbs and she shot it and turns to me and says " I thought you said this had some kick."

Buy it shoot it don't look back

I think you should look around your area and decide for yourself how hard 10mm ammo is to find, and how expensive it is.

When I had a G-20 I bought a KKM .40s&w conversion barrel for it, that way I could shoot either round. Just swap the barrels and go.

Now that I'm handloading, I'm trying to get my G-20 back.

I have a new G20, also. I got the $115 Lone Wolf 9X25 ported barrel and the 20# captured spring with SS rod to go with it. The Hogue grip is too large for me on the G20, but it fits me well on the Steyr M9A1. Colt is coming out with the Delta Elite in 10mm. As more guns are sold in it again, ammo should be easier to find. I am used to buying ammo online. When you live in the woods..... Good luck.

i spotted some 10mm ammo at academy sporting goods, not to bad a price either, so if u have 1 in your neck of the woods, u might try them.10mm ballistics are equal to .41 magnum i believe.

Double Tap, Buffalo Bore, Georgia Arms canned heat - all have worked well in my G20, though DT is my personal favorite. I have 10 boxes of the 135-gr noslers in my safe right now.

Some shops in my area carry 10mm factory ammo, others don't. Online ordering is the best way to go.

I love shooting my G20. It gets more "exercise" than just about any of my other handguns. It's also my nightstand gun, and I do carry it as well sometimes either in a fanny pack in summer or a blackhawk CQC in the winter months.

The 10mm round is a great round for most everything. I beleive it is even seeing a minor comeback, at least here in the Pacific Northwest. The ammo that is here locally doesn't hang out long on dealer shelves. I reload also, so that does help alot. I have the G29 compact and the weapon is amazing. I love it for long range shooting.

I dont own a 40 conv. barrel for mine, I have a couple of Fourty's already. My vote is Yes, do it... But before you purchase buy some ammo first.

Buy a G21 instead:supergrin:

I second that. I bought a brand new G20 and couldnt make myself place an order for the 10mm ammo.So i turned around and sold it without even shooting it. The 10mm round is a great all around cartridge when not loaded to watered-down specs. But.... and here comes the can of worms.... Is it gonna make someone more dead than a 9mm, .40 or .45? All of which can be had for much cheaper prices... Think about it before you plop down the money for one.

I also have a new G20 I bought a week ago and have not shot it yet. I suspect that 10MM is going to make a come back because my local Sportsman's Warehouse just got in a big shipment of 10 shells about the same time I bought my gun, and it's all already sold out, except for the cheap stuff in aluminum cases. I don't buy the idea that it's a dying caliber, (as it once appeared to be when the FBI dropped it) and I think it may get cheaper in the future as more people rediscover it. I'm going to use mine for hunting. You can't easily get 6" hunting barrels for just every Glock, (a few of them, yes) but you can for the 10MM from almost every barrel maker, and in both ported and non-ported.

You need to check your local area to see what is available. Every shop I frequent carries various brands INCLUDING DoubleTap on the shelf.

It is pricier than 9, 40, 45. however it is the same price (in my area) as 357magnum (which I love also).

Interestingly, both 10mm and 357mag are capable or taking deer class game :)

Sweet! I have been reading and looking locally for all the 10mm info there is, and it is all good. ^^^ I did look at the 21, but I have my eye on the prize and nothing will get in the way of the 20(21 later though:supergrin:). I am really into it I guess. I went out and picked up some 10mm Hornady HP's so I can start getting in the mood. I am stoked to pick this up! Thanks for all the replies, and keep them coming it makes me feel great to hear all this good stuff about this round. fra3

Cabelas is selling 180g FMJ in bulk I saw today. The price isn't too bad either. There were no ballistics, (I'm sure it isn't anything too hot). I don't remember the price, but not too bad.
10mm is definetly making a comeback.

Buy a 21? Why? I probalby will some day, but it isn't going to be 'cuz the price of ammo. If it bugs you that much..reload...and learn another cool hobby. (like I did)

Who the hell buys ammo locally anyways? This is 2008?

Well, I'm kidding, but I wouldn't let the fact it isn't at walmart keep me from buying the greatest round in the world shooting through the best handgun in the world.

If you only buy ammo from local shops or Wally-World forget about it.

However if you're internet savvy or a reloader you won't have any problems.

10mm's not for newbs, it's more of a round for seasoned shooters who are bored with the usual 9mm/.45 options, and want something more from a pistol caliber

Reloading is the way to make the 10mm Auto perform. Pick up and old loading book like the red covered Modern Reloading by Lee and get the recipe for the Nosler 135 HP with IMR 800x powder. Listed max velocity from a 5" barrel is 1670 fps and the pressure is not even high. I have shot this load well a tad under and its like shooting a 223 out of your Glock 20-milk jugs filled with water exlode. In the 6" hunting barrel velocities are off the chart for a handgun. You can shoot point on at a 100 yards.

I'm the same way with my 29

Like everyone else has said, Double Tap has great SD ammo that travels very fast, and Georgia Arms has great bulk deals on their "canned heat". GA also has a +P round that will make things a little more intense, although I'm not sure how the ballistics compare to DT rounds.

You are correct Sir! I am sick of 9's(XD)and not so sick of but over for now feelings on the ACP (I love .45 and own a Kimber (Custom Covert II)) So I am turning to the big 10... :bringiton:

Correct me???
I thought that 10mm didn't have a +p designation for any of their rounds no matter how "hot" they were.
Can someone pipe in.

That means their ammo surpasses the SAAMI maximum pressure, which, for the 10mm is, I believe, ~37,500 psi. They also have, for example, 9mm +p+. I don't like such rounds as I don't believe you're getting much in the way of additional performance in exchange for reduced safety margin and extra wear and tear.

Well they're not equal, but they overlap a fair bit. Upper level 10mm is about the same as mid level .41 magnum. I'd say that's close.

I'd say a high end 10mm would be like a lower end .41 Mag. The big plus with the 10mm is that you can get decent numbers and still have high capacity, basically like a low powered high cap .41.

Glolt20-91
08-25-2008, 14:39
To put the 10mm in .41mag territory is overflating what happens in the real world. High end .40S&W over lap low end 10mm that many 10mm shooters practice with.

From published data, DT advertised velocities tend to run on the fast side compared to chrono data; as in this article;

On the other hand, Corbon tends to chrono hotter than advertised, especially in their DPX line.

One really needs to handload for the G20 with 6" inch barrel to get true 10mm performance. Of all the 10mm loads I've loaded and tested; the 175gr Silvertip at a true 1400fps is the most explosive, plus it also penetrates well.

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o144/aztrekker/At%20the%20range/G20a002.jpg

If one really wants true big bore magnum performance in a pistol, look no further than a .460 Rowland/1911 conversion for up to 970fpe and this is with lower than .45auto recoil.

http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/rowland.htm

Real muzzle velocities with typical 1911 grouping;

http://www.realguns.com/loads/460Rowland.htm

A 260gr cast at 1100fps+ would bust up a black bear's shoulder pretty well; 300gr/.44mag for bigger bruins.

The 10mm is a top tier pistol caliber with proper loads, but it's not a .41mag nor a primary defensive/bear attack sidearm. The trade-off with top end loads is slower split times due to increased recoil, no such thing as a free lunch here.

Howdy,

Ammo is no problem w/ a 10mm.

I have a G20 that is so old, it came w/ 15rd mags before the ban.

All you need for ammo is a couple of boxes of Win Silvertips, some 180gr FMJ's, maybe a box or two of Hydrashoks, and a reloading kit w/ brass, bullets, powder, etc.

What woes? I have had my Glock 20 for about a decade and it still puts a big ole grin on my face everytime i shoot it. Mine likes Corbon 135 grain loads and I reload it for my gun with a load I refuse to divulge. This gun is more fun that my first 41 Mag was when Ruger first started making them back in the mid 60's.

Does I cost more to shoot it...yes, but in return it gives bigger grins.

I plan to add a Glock 21, but that is mainly because I still have an old H&G #68 bullet mold and I currently don't have an excuse to use that bullet mold and I have always enjoyed casting with that mold.

The problem with 10mm are that major factory ammo is not much better than high performance 40S&W ammo. Now, the major factory ammo is quite a bit less than the cartridge is capable of, thus companies like Double Tab started making and selling ammo. IMO, the .401 bullets just ought to fit in a 9mm frame gun. The larger framed guns ought to fit larger .451 bullets. I like the Glock 35 with it's longer barrel to make the most velocity out of the glock pistol. I can find tons of 40S&W range brass,(just try looking for 10mm range brass at your next outing) load low and the .40 shoots softer than a 9mm or even load the the 40S&W almost to 10mm speeds. I would evaluate a gun/cartridge on what's important to me, ie:ammo availability, brass availability, cost of ammo, is it fun shooting the gun,can I conceal the gun,/etc. Only you can make the final decision.

Everyone has their opinions and that mine!
