Planning a long road trip out west and was wondering what folks here can tell me about securing a gun in a hotel safe in Las Vegas. I'm not sure which hotel yet as I'm meeting a buddy out there and he is setting it up. He mentioned the Luxor but I don't know yet which one it will be. All I know is that it will be on the strip.

Now here's my dilemma: I don't want to leave the gun in my hotel room or in my car and I don't want to walk around with it on me even though it would be unloaded. I'm not about to do anything stupid like carry a piece while out having a good time drinking and gambling. I'm looking to be safe and smart about keeping things legal.

Basically I would be looking to secure a notebook computer and a glock replete with ammo and maybe some cash in the hotel safe. What is the procedure for using a hotel safe? Do they require knowing what is being left in their possession? Can I give them a locked case about the size of a backpack or is that too big? Do I have to inventory the contents? Is it insured? Will they have access to my stuff or is it like a safe deposit box like you'd see at a bank?

I'd call the hotel and ask but don't know which one yet and figured folks here would be able to give me some pointers. If anyone has travelled with a gun before and can tell me how to do it that would be appreciated.

Thanks much everyone.

The Strip hotels I've stayed in usually have in-room safes. However, I don't know whether your laptop would fit through the door; some are fairly small.

I've only used a hotel safe (behind the front desk) once, but it wasn't in Vegas. It was a bank safe deposit box-you keep one of two keys. The bank of guest lock box safes (each about 3"x5"x24") was behind the counter, not behind a 3-foot thick door.

Every major Vegas hotel I ever stayed in had a safe in every room - you pick the combo when you lock it -

I would feel OK leaving a gun in it -

I know of three types of safes used at Vegas hotels. Room safes, safety deposit boxes and the hotel vault. Your laptop won't fit in either of the first two and I doubt the Luxor will bother securing it in their vault. You may be able to bribe security to store it in a semi-secure cabinet, I've done this with a cased rifle, but I would rather stow the laptop in the trunk of my car or back at the room. If the hotel has a safety deposit box, it will be one of the small boxes and have two keys like the banks use where you keep one key. You should have privacy to store and retrieve the contents and not need to reveal what you are keeping inside. Your Glock will fit if you break down the upper off the frame. I've stored two, G19 and HK USPc in one small box this way. If I recall, I needed to leave an additional deposit charged to my room until I returned the key.

Luck in Vegas!
