View Full Version : Will upgrading a (fairly new) NiCd cordless phone to NiMh damage anything?

I know that generally NiCd chargers can't handle NiMhs, but this is a pretty new phone and the only replacement battery I found at the supermarket was a NiMh instead of the NiCd that came in it. Frankly I was surprised to find that the original was a NiCd! Is there any difference between regular battery chargers and a phone base/charger that would make this a safe thing to do?
Aside from the type of battery, the configuration, size, voltage etc. are all the same.
It appears the answer is: It depends:

They may have changed the battery type during production and yours is an early run model. I would read the manual and look on the manufacturers website.

Well after reading everything I could find on the web, contacting the manufacturer (Uniden, with no response; good service guys!) and trying in vain to find the manual, I came to the conclusion that as long as I kept an eye on things, the worst that would happen is that I'd ruin the new battery by over charging it. So, I installed it, put it on to charge, and checked in with it over the next eight hours or so (not leaving the general area, just in case. Hey, I was baking some sourdough. Hah.)
A couple days later; no issues. Seems like the upgrade is perfectly viable, if anyone else cares... And I can only assume that the performance/lifespan will be greater than the NiCd.
Don't blame me if you burn down your house though.
