DENVER, United States, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Four people have been arrested for suspectedly being related to a plot to kill U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, the local CBS4 TV channel reported Monday.
A Denver police source told the TV that they arrested a young man, identified as Tharin Gartrell, 28, on Sunday morning, for driving recklessly.
In his rented pick-up car, police found two rifles, camouflage clothing, a bulletproof vest, a spotting scope and met amphetamine.
Gartrell's arrest led to the capture of three other suspects.
One of the suspects told authorities that they were planning to shoot Obama from a high vantage point using a rifle, the report said.
Another suspect gave an affirmative answer when asked if he came to Denver to kill Obama, the report added.
The case is still under investigation by the Secret Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and a terrorism task force.
The city and state police, the FBI, the Defense Department and the Secret Service have deployed thousands of policemen, special agents, analysts and other staff to secure the four-day convention from any threat.
Denver, the biggest city in Colorado, is to host nearly 5,000 Democratic officials and some 15,000 reporters during the four-day Democratic national convention from Aug. 25 to 28.
On the last day of the convention, Barack Obama will officially receive the party's nomination for presidential candidate and Senator Joe Biden of Delaware will receive nomination for the party's vice presidential candidate.

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking. No one involved in a real assassination plot would allow themselves to get caught like this and they certainly wouldn't spill the beans about other's involvement.

Your train of logic appears to be:
They wish to kill the candidate, therefore they must be well organized and intelligent.
...The former does not necessarily lead to the latter. Plenty of idiots can want a political figure dead, and plenty of idiots have been caught planning assassinations. Or mass shootings. Or any number of other events.

I'm amazed that the general climate of the board one week is cries (with a gleeful undertone) of "He's going to be assassinated for sure! He'll never make it!", and the next week of skepticism that someone might actually try.

I am no way an Obama supporter, and I don't want to see him win, but something ain't right here.

Call me crazy but even though Obama is a socialist scumbag, he is a presidental nominee, the position does deserve some respect. His position also deserve to be protected as a part of our democratic heritage. We are not some 3rd world craphole where presidential nominees get wacked ever 5 minutes.

I don't see it that way. It's plausible that these guys were a less sophisticated element of a very well planned assassination plot. A methamphetamine type drugs would be useful to embolden a killer, particularly one who is aware that he is likely going to his death. It is also helpful to be able to stay awake for prolonged periods.
Poorly educated racists, with long rifles. Drug addicts. These guys look very similar to James Earl Ray to me.
Law enforcement /dignitary protection can never afford to underestimate the ability of a cell of committed, well equipped long riflemen to murder their target. I'm not going to describe how such a cell can accomplish their goals in a public forum. The point is that they can succeed. They can do incredible damage to this country. They may have already done so.
Imagine a cell of riflemen attacking a presidential candidate who is giving a speech at an open air stadium. Or attacking before that speech. Or days later. Is there another cell, who the members of this first cell know nothing about? Is a foreign government involved? Are there elements of the U.S. security apparatus involved?
- A Muslim Canadian man with a bottle of highly toxic crystallized poison dies in his hotel room, a week before the Democratic convention. Was he going to mount an attack? Why is there nothing on TV about that man?
- A cell of riflemen are arrested with vehicles, fake IDs and long rifles. They admit to a plot to murder a U.S. senator who is a serious presidential candidate.
I wouldn't go anywhere near Denver, anytime soon. I think it's too dangerous. Too volatile a situation. I'm concerned that both of these cases were either plots to attack the convention, or attempts on Senator Obama's life. :drillsgt:
